KB891861 - 4 successful updates and keeps on updating - why?

KB891861 (W2K SP4 rollup) - My update history on the MS (Windows) update
website:

indicates that I have updated this successfully 4 times over the past
several weeks.

Background:
I turned off the automatic update option during the same time period. I had
updated this 'rollup' both before and after I had turned the option off.

I updated this rollup repeatedly because (1) I mistakenly assumed I could
trust the MS update system to correctly verify what, if anything needs to be
updated on my PC. (2) Also, after I suspected on one of those updating
occasions that I had updated the package before, I checked and could not
find KB891861 posted on my Control Center 'Add-Remove Progam' listing. (3) I
had not bothered to check my update history on the update website as I did
this time.

This update is still not posted on my 'Add-Remove' listing.
Is there something missing on my system that keeps signaling Windows-update
that I still need this particular package?

I would appreciate an explanation. Thanks - Blithe

Hi;

First, look in your Add/Remove Program list for "Update Rollup 1 for Windows
2000 SP4" instead of the KB number. That is how this one is listed. Do
you see it there?

Also check this key in the Registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\HotFix\Update Rollup 1

You should see (in the right pane) an entry named "Installed" and it should
have a value of "1" if the update installed correctly. I suspect that entry
either is not there or has a value other than "1" on your system.

This could be caused by a number of things. A 3rd party program that (at
the last minute) interferes with the final steps in the install process.
For example, some versions of Norton will attempt to protect against
Registry writes; as do some of the 3rd party so-called "Uninstall Helper"
programs. Or it could be a sign of malware on the system.

Anyway, perhaps the easiest solution for you will be to manually download
the update, boot into Safe Mode, and with your AV and any other 3rd party
"helper" apps disabled. Attempt to install it from the local .EXE file
while in Safe Mode.

Note that you must be logged in as the Administrator when doing this. You
will find the direct download link about halfway down on this site:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891861 You may want to keep that URL
handy, as there are some additional troubleshooting tips there if needed.

NOTE: If you did indeed see the "Update Rollup" entry in Add/Remove
Programs, use that to UNinstall the update as your first action after
booting into Safe Mode. Then proceed with the manual install.

Hello SKY - I literally spent most all day to this point (1) verified
"Update Rollup 1 for Windows" on program list (2)
verified there was no register key for it (3) Uninstalled it in safe mode
(4) W2K ordered a reboot to cleanup before permitting the re-installation of
the downloaded rollup package (4) W2k refused to reinstall in either safe
mode (after first advising a safe mode installation was not recommended) or
routine boot mode because it could not find installation files or the path
to those files; my searches verified the correct files were indeed present
but the system had them under restricted access (5) I then accessed MS
update online which after scanning listed 23 critical updates including,
again, Update Rollup 1. (6) All updates were successfully installed but
one - a virtual machine patch. (7) the proper register key and value were
now present and it was relisted on the program list (8) Back to Windows
update online! and after the scan - you've guessed it - Win Update
announced it was ready to install Update Rollup 1 for Windows - yet again.

Any thoughts? No offense, you still deserve thanks, but before I consider
any additional suggestions that you might offer, can you verify if you are
the official Microsoft monitor of this newsgroup? - thanks, Blithe

There is no "official MS Monitor" for this or any of the other Public MS
newsgroups. These are here to allow users to help users; I'm just another
person sitting at home who owns the same version of Windows that you are
using. You will find some posters here are identified as MS MVPs, but
again they are not MS employees; they just have been recognized for past
contributions to the user community, based on their knowledge in helping
others in these newsgroups as one criteria.

As for further guesses on what you might do, IF you have the "Installed = 1"
entry in your Registry for that update then I have no idea on why you keep
getting offered to install it again.
