JPGs not opening on desktop

JPGs on my desktop are not opening when I click on them. They will not open
if I try right clicking and select preview, edit or open with to open them.
JPGs in folders on my desktop or other places will open. If I take the JPGs
that will not open and put them into a folder they open. If I take the same
JPGs and put them back on the desktop they will not open.
Last night these files were opening.
I have not installed any new programs. I am using Vista SP1 and AVG anti
virus.

Can you recommend a fix for the problem.
Thank you

I think that I am narrowing the problem down. I can get JPGs to open with
all other programs except for Windows Photo Gallery which was my default
program for opening JPGs. Windows Photo Gallery will open JPGs in folders
and other places on the computer but not JPGs on my Desktop.

I do not yet have Vista SP1 installed. I had installed a Windows Update a
couple of days ago but not SP1. The tech at Dell recommended that I not
install SP1 at this time.

Please recommend a solution to this problem.

Thank you,
John

Aloha Ramesh,
The work around that you pointed out me worked--thank you. Unfortunatly I
now have a folder full of URL shortcuts that I cannot have on my desktop.

Do you know if there is a resolution or solution to this problem? Do you
think that this problem is fixed in Vista SP1?

Thank you,
John

Aloha Tepid,
If you know that it is not a VIsta problem do you know who's problem it is
besides mine. Please indicate your knowledge of the problem and why you know
it is not a Vista problem.

No idea, John. I'll try to replicate this problem in my Vista system and
post back.

Aloha Ramesh,
I did a qucik test and discovered that new URLs do not create the problem of
not being able to openin JPGs with Windows Photo Gallery. A couple of days
before the problem I did change the User Account Setting to Turn on Account
Control (UAC). Apparetnly I need this turned on so that Quickbooks Time
Keeper for Outlook will work.
Thank you for looking into the problem.
Mahalo,
John
