Java Virtual Machine

Anybody know where I can get a copy of: Java Virtual Machine
A website I'm looking at uses those hover buttons (that I will get rid of)
and it won't display properly. New computer just set up and apparently MS
has remove it (Java Virtual Machine) from the Browser Updates.

I've been checking MS Download. So far it's been a mess going from link to
link with no results.

Hover buttons require Java Virtual Machine which can be
downloaded from http://java.sun.com
However, most people have quit using Hover Buttons
because windows XP / IE6 do not come with JVM installed.

You can not longer get the JVM from MS, you would have to install the SUN version unless you have
the downloaded exe installer file version from MS on your old system.

The filename would be: msjavx86.exe

I agree, but this site already has it. I'm not ready to make the changes
yet.. until I get familiar with the site.

Something stupid prompted me to update my JVM about 6 months ago...I used the one from Sun and I hate it. The one that came from MS seemed much more stable (proably still on my machine somewhere)- I wonder if there's a way to retrograde.

I guess you'd have to uninstall the sun version. I think it's in the
add/remove programs. I have a copy of the old Microsoft jvm on a CD, It
came as an addendum piece to some other software or computer. It's an OEM
disk.

It's ironic that the Microsoft JVM works (or seems to work) better than the
sun version (at least with visual effects rendering).

You don't need to uninstall the Sun JVM. In Tools | Internet Options |
Advanced | Java (Sun) you can turn it off. If you have the Microsoft JVM
installed it will become the default for Java applets after the browser is
re-started.

If you don't have Microsoft's JVM you can get it at:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_9.htm

If you want to be able to switch back and forth between MS and sun JVMs you
can use:

Once you have made active or install MS JVM, then you need to run Windows Update.

Good point about updating an in-active copy. Updating is part of the
instructions for a first installation of Java at
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_9.htm
but if your MS JVM is has been inactive since the current version (3810) was
released in April 2003 you need to upgrade to get the security fix.

Yah I don't get it either...Sun's JVM locks up 50% of the time, or takes forever to run something, then it'd doesn't shut down until you close the browser and then...and error pops up that Sun's help system has died (or something dumb like that). MS's was more seamless..or at least if it craashed I never saw it :)

Mickey...thanks for the suggestions. How can I tell what version my old MS JVM was?

Mickey...thanks for the suggestions. How can I tell what version my old MS
JVM was?

In Internet Explorer, View | Java Console should produce a console beginning
with "Microsoft (R) VM for Java, 5.0 Release 5.0.0.3810". If you don't see
the Java Console command, enable it using Tools | Internet Options |
Advanced | Microsoft VM \ Java console enabled and restarting the browser.

The Sun JVM is improving. The 1.4.2 version is pretty good, as is beta 2 of
1.5. Each offers more up-to-date Java support but neither runs as nicely as
the classic MS JVM.

Mickey,

I can't see MS's Java Console, maybe because I still have Sun's JVM 1.4.02 set as default?

The only reason I had switched was my son needed Sun's version for Physics class homework thingie...and I am not happy with Sun's version and he's graduated now - so I can go back to MS now.

What's MS's JM file name, maybe I can find it that way.

THANKS !

Rob

Even when I turn on the Sun JVM I still get the MS Java Console using View |
Java console. It is a bit confusing that the Sun Java Console is accessed
via a different menu entry (Tools | Sun Java Console).

To get the MS Java Console you need to set Tools | Internet Options |
Advanced | Microsoft VM | Java console enabled and restart the browser. If
you don't see such a setting it may be that MS Java was trashed or never
installed. At one point Microsoft had a MS Java remover that removed Java
in a way that it could not be reinstalled using any current versions of the
MS JVM.

If you need to (re)install MS JVM follow the instructions at
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_9.htm or some other site that offers
the 3810 MS JVM and looks legit.

Ah I see it now, it's where the JIT complier choice is...I musta missed it before. I'll try it ! And the Sun one is just above it.

Thanks!

Robo

I think Sun has done an excellent job on the newer JVMs. Much less nags.
But note it is more secure then Microsoft's but can still be used by outside
forces in ways you may not like.

G

George Hester

I don't think he needs to uninstall the Sun version. In the control panel
he can turn it off. Then just do this:

Start | Run | regsvr32 msjava.dll | OK | OK. Now he has Microsoft's JVM
current. Trouble is he needs Microsoft's JVM in the first place.

G

George Hester

Start | Run | cmd | OK

jview

The version is the first line of the output. This is actually not the final
word on your version. There are later version(s) (minor) that don't show
here.
