i've done someting odd to my Outlook view....

(2003) it no longer tells me how many mail I have in my inbox, and doesn't
give me a status of 'sent / received' i.e. when I used to press
'Send/Receive' I would get a popup box bottom right indicating status i.e.
'sending 1 of 10' - now I just get an odd incon, which when mousing over
reveals 'Microsoft Office Outlook is Synchronising Folders'...

any idea what I've done?

You should see a send/receive button on your toolbar. On that button you
should see an upside down triangle indicating there is a drop down box. The
last entry in the drop down box is send/receive settings. You've likely
unchecked the box that tells Outlook to display your send/receive status.
