ISP Freezes Every 5 minutes

XP Home, SP2. I've recently loaded AOL to a newer PC. I believe I have all
updates. The PC freezes every 5+ minutes for about 10 seconds, all the time.
It doesn't disconnect, just freezes. The DSL light on the modem flashes at
the same time and I get a Windows message up - Local Network - A cable is
unplugged. I've checked all connections many times.. As it's as regular as
clockwork I suspect some sort of timer involved. AOL have not been able to
help despite numerous suggestions including a hint to 'Disable Idle Timer'
but instructions were for W.98SE and did not seem to apply to XP.
This did not happen on my older PC running W.98SE although I got plenty of
disconnects. Some disconnects on this PC when mouse clicked but not as
frequent. PC has two HDD's and one is probably faulty. AOL loaded on the good
one..

Slow boot time, or delays / Blackouts or Time-outs while waiting for webpages to load.

One is going to have bloatware problems whenever an ISP requires that
one load their software.

You're welcome.
In the future, could you please reply to the link that had the cure? That way, all can benefit
from the solution. (I've pasted it below for readers)

Sorry to have not followed protocol, but I'm new to this site. Unfortunately,
the problem is back... groan... I'll have to work through your other
solutions. A friend in IT calls AOL 'Always Off Line' and I'm pretty tired of
all the problems it seems to carry with it. I still haven't figured out what
it's done to my other PC..

"Training Wheels" for the Internet.

Never forget who lead the charge to take monthly ISP Dial-Up
service above $19.95 ?

I've just noticed that the modem DSL light flashes every 5 minutes when I'm
not online... I don't think it's too much to ask to simply surf a little and
send and receive e-mails, which is all I want to do, but getting there is so
darn complex.. Soon as the years contract ends, I'll be looking elsewhere..
