Is XP SP2 Retarded????????

After installing SP2 I kept continually getting DEP errors when accessing MY
DOCUMENTS using Windows Explorer. I would also get them continually when
accessing other document files. Never got any errors accessing files with
other programs(i.e. excel, adobe, etc.) So I found out it defaulted to
having DEP errors when using Windows Explorer, what else is it used for? I
normally a big defender of Windows but this is without doubt one of the most
retarded thing I am ever seen.

What is "DEP" errors?

Its a Data Execution Prevention Error So for example If I go into My
Documents to find a file, as soon as I open the folder this error comes up
and when you acknowledge it it closes the folder and you have to start over
again when you will most likely get the same error again.

It can be disabled in boot.ini. See this link for details:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/sp2mempr.mspx

I would suspect some other underlying problem is causing the issue. Treating
the symptom may not cure the problem. Unfortunately I don't know where you
would start looking. I haven't played with DEP yet.

I didn't disable it but I was able to turn it off for Windows Explorer and
have not had problems since then but my point still is that it is completely
assinine to default DEP to be on for Windows Explorer because then you
cannot use it then.

I haven't run across this problem in many installs of SP2, including Athlon
64's which have enhanced capabilty with DEP. That's why I think the problem
is a symptom of something else. Explorer normlly runs fine with DEP. Your
explorer may be comprised with a trojan/malware. Have you installed any 3rd
party enhancements to Explorer?

Thanks for the info!

Maybe there is a problem with particular shell extension that you've
installed.
Can you tell me what is displayed in popup menu when you right-click
on folder and what when you right-click on document?

Maybe there is problem with a file in your "My documents".
Please try this: Create temporary folder and move
everything (files and subfolders) from "My documents" to it.
Than re-enable DEP and open "My documents" ...

BTW, maybe this can help (ShellExView):
