Is Windows Defender running

I just installed windows defender and restarted the computer but I do not see
any evidence that it is running. There is no icon in the system tray and no
mention in task manager (applications or processes) that I can see. I can
open it from the start button, but when I close it it seems to just
disappear. Is it running and where can I see that? Any advice would be
appreciated.

Hello RB,
You should see MSASCui.exe (the user interface), and MsMpEng.exe (the
service executable) running.
In Windows Defender--real-time protection is done by a system service,
starting at boot time--that's the Windows Defender service, whose executable
is MsMpEng.exe.
MpCmdRun.exe monitors for the existence of new signatures and is responsible
initiating the updating process when new signatures are available. ...

I hope this post is helpful.
Let us know how it works ºut.

I installed the latest CTP5308 from Vista yesterday and there was a windows
defender icon in the systray and in the control panal. Why isn't there a
systray icon in my XP-pro and is there one in Vista?
A systray icon was also present in Microsoft Antispyware so why leave it out
now?

I agree with Han. A system tray icon to visually confirm that WD is running
should be visible so that its absence would be an indication of a problem.

It is not common to check services from time to time to see if WD is working
properly. I do not do so for other services. You can directly see if there is
a problem if a systray icon changes or is absent. Te WD program is to
important to do without a systray icon.

Users will have the ability to add the icon back in a future release.

That will probably eliminate about 50% of the complaints/questions on
these NG's. LOL.

Nah---the default will be off, and the switch will prob'ly be way at the
bottom of general settings, and the folks who need the setting won't find
it. I'm quite sure it is too much to ask that it be set as a dialog in the
setup routine.
