Its nice to hear that it would work pretty good, however i am curious
as to how it compares to other cards around that price range. Nothing
on the internet seems to compare specific cards, someone has to make a
site where graphics cards verse eachother...that site would be awesome.

Theres a lot of sites that do that. Toms Hardware has a huge list. You
have to know what cards are in what price range though because prices
fluctuate all the time so a frozen in time review might not be the
best thing to look at anyway.

Almost all reviews mention at least one other card though not always
so.

The thing thats very difficult is when you have a few decent much
older cards still selling on the market and you want to compare it to
NEW cards. Sometimes the old card just isnt on the same chart with the
new ones and these test sites can often change their bench mark
testing software. Sure you can estimate the performance but then it
becomes a real hassle.

The other is these companies often flood the mkt with variations on
older card designs which are never or seldom tested like the 9550 etc
or the variations they started piling on with the 6800 - XT etc.

You just need to make the decision between the two major cards that
dominate the market. You will either go with ATI or nVidia.

Once you ahvwe determined this, then you need to understand how they
are named. For ATI, the higher the x???? the better the card. So in
order is would be x1900, x1800, x1600, x1300, x850, x800 and so on.

Here is the page on ati that lays this out:

http://www.ati.com/products/gamer.html

If you are going to spend that much the state of the art card is the
x1900 so you are better off getting the 1900 or 1800 in terms of life
of the part. As new games come out they will make use of the newer
features the 850x doesn't have,

Also try www.pricewatch.com for lower prices.

Also here is a link to a great site that rates the cards against each
other. Tomshardware.com. There is some specific info in this
link(look for next to page thropugh all the pages and also see the
prior installments.

If you use Linux, or expect to need to use it in the future, go for
Nvidia. FWIW my old card was a Radeon 9800 Pro, my replacement was an
Nvidia Geforce 6600GT.
