Is there an updated OS available for the HP iPAQ Pocket PC?

G

This Vista computer is not living up to its hype. First of all, I find that
my PC camera won't work with it, now I am finding that my pocket PC (an HP
1945) may not work either.

I started by talking to HP and found that my iPAQ wasn't currently
compatible with Vista either but that Microsoft was coming out with an
upgrade to the OS 'soon'. Well, they must be keeping it a secret because I
haven't found ANYTHING about an upgrade on the webpage.

What I'd like to know is does anyone know how to get an HP iPAQ to sync with
a Vista computer? Has anyone heard of an upgrade that might be coming out to
the Mobile OS that would allow an HP 1945 to talk to it?

Thanks,

Um, yes, I did that already. But HP says that I need an OS upgrade for the
PDA in order to get it to talk to the Mobile Device Center first, and they
said Microsoft would have it.

I have checked and while HP has an upgrade for a later model, they don't
have one for the 1945. And they said Microsoft would have it. I was asking
here because there didn't seem to be anything on the microsoft site about it.
Do you have any information on an OS upgrade for the HP iPAQ 1945?

Ariel;
An "OS upgrade"?
Ask HP to be more specific.
There are patches for various issues regularly released.
If HP knows of something specific, they should be able to tell you
what to look for.

However what Anando suggested is probably all that Microsoft can do.
If your model is not compatible with Windows Vista, it is up to HP to
furnish Windows Vista compatible drivers if they feel they need to
support their customers.
It is possible that HP has abandoned the customers of the older
models.

WMDC will synchronise Outlook versions 2002 to 2007 with your device. A copy
of Outlook 2002 would have been in the box with your 1945.

For now at least, WMDC will not synchronise any device with the Vista
Calendar, Contacts or Mail applications. This may change and be what HP were
referring to.

No, Microsoft does not provide OS updates for mobile devices. That is the
responsibility of the device manufacturer. Each copy of Windows Mobile is
customized and compiled specifically for the hand-held model it runs on.

I was of the impression that the earliest version that would work with WMDC
was 2003? I do have the Outlook 2002 on my disk and would be willing to try
it - what have I got to loose?

When I was looking around on the internet, I found someone on a bulletin
board that said he was able to get a 1945 to sync with Vista so I am somewhat
reassured, but now, I just have to know 'how'. :D

When I looked on the HP site, it seemed they had 'updates' for some of the
other models but not the 1900 series - are you aware of an update for the
1900 series?

According to everything I have been able to find, HP does support this model
and even Microsoft has indicated that anything with Pocket Pro 2003, like
this one, and later IS Vista compatible.

Now the issue is, to find the darned patch!

I will check with HP again. Thank you for your time.

According to everything I've been able to find, this unit can run on Vista -
I just have to know how to get it to do so. Thank you for your reply.

If you connect your 1945 to Vista it should load the necessary drivers and
offer to install WMDC. You may need to play with the synchronisation
settings to get a first connection. After the first synchronisation you
should have no problems.

If you need a manual download of WMDC see
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/devicecenter.mspx

There are no OS updates for the 1945. For other updates for the h1945 see

You mean that you older peripherals aren't Vista-compatible, not that
Vista is lacking, then. Contact their respective manufacturers for
updated drivers and/or software.

Or, more likely, the HP rep didn't explain that it was HP that were the
ones who had to upgrade their iPaq OS and software.

What I'd like to know is does anyone know how to get an HP iPAQ to sync with
a Vista computer?

Only HP can tell you that, but it seems you've already received their
standard answer: "It's entirely Microsoft's fault that we can't be
bothered to provide updated software for our own products."

I'd call being unable to accomodate perfectly functional software and
hardware decidedly 'lacking'.

What is it about you people? Do you HAVE to drink the koolaide? I feel
like I am talking to Mac users - gawd!

Not everyone who criticizes this new OS is bad, or wrong. The fact is this
new system forces you to spend a LOT of money on upgrades, new hardware or
new programs. And it isn't as if you can even still buy an XP machine!
Seriously, if I'd wanted to have no control over my operating system and to
have everything dictated to me, I'd have bought a Mac. Though, with every
new 'upgrade', Windows is looking more and more like their operating system
anyway.

I'd like to make this thing work, but, seriously?, this 'Vista is perfect,
it's you who are wrong' kind of attitude is going to drive people to Linux
faster than anything else you could do. It's that attitude that kept me from
buying Mac when I first got into computers back in the 80's and is upsetting
to see it in the Microsoft people. Users are not children, nor are we your
enemy, so quit being defensive. It doesn't help solve the problem.

Thanks a bunch! This is really helpful advice.

I ordered Office 2007 and, just to be on the safe side, I will wait to try
this until
I have loaded that program. All of the material I have read says that
Outlook
2002 isn't a current enough version to work with Vista.

Thank you for your patience and clear instructions. You have given me
exactly
what I needed!

Really? Is that Why my new DVD player won't handle LaserDisks?

You have legacy (old) hardware; it doesn't work with a new OS. This
isn't the fault of the OS, it's the fault of the device's manufacturer
refusing to provide continued support because they want to sell you a
newer iPaq.

Not everyone who criticizes this new OS is bad, or wrong.

And no one ever said they were. But you're blaming Micrtosoft for HP's
lack of support; this is patently absurd.

The fact is this
new system forces you to spend a LOT of money on upgrades, new hardware or
new programs.

As has every new OS throughout the brief history of personal computers.
What's your point? It was your responsibility to ensure the
compatibility of your peripherals before opting to purchase the new
operating system.

And it isn't as if you can even still buy an XP machine!

But you can! All you have do do is ask.

I've no sympathy for people who fail to spend a few minutes doing
product research, and then blame the new product because it doesn't
fulfill their needs/desires.

Ariel, I can assure you that the 1945 should work under Vista, my 1940 syncs
just fine. I am running the latest version of WMDC, version 6.1.6965, and
Office 2007, although I would think that it should sync even without office
installed.
I've been using this PDA and Vista ever since the beta days, and while it
certainly was flaky at first, it seems quite stable now.

Definitely drinking the koolaide....

As has every new OS throughout the brief history of personal computers.

And this is a good thing? Oh, wait, that's right... you drank the koolaide
so you keep thinking that everything that makes more money for the
corporations and frustrates and impoverishes users is a 'good' thing...

*rolleyes*

Well, yes. I'm rather fond of the idea of progress and changing
technologies. It's much more interesting then to still be using sliderules.

Oh, wait, that's right... you drank the koolaide

No koolaid required; just an awareness of reality of the world in which
we live.
so you keep thinking that everything that makes more money for the
corporations and frustrates and impoverishes users is a 'good' thing...

Don't know where you got that idea; you're apparently confusing what I
said with one of those imaginary conversations going on in your head.

It's people like you that keep Linux alive... Way to go.

Oh, yeah. A kludged-together version of a 40-year old OS developed by
a telephone company. Now, there's progress.

Sorry to burst the bubble here....but HP has announced that they will not
offer any Windows Mobile upgrades for the current devices including the
current RX series. there are endless sync and document issues with Office
2007 and Vista. Everything I own is HP and I am not very happy about their
current stance. In the "Enterprise" Apple is not the answer either. Why after
so many years can't someone make Windows devices that JUST WORK!!!!
