Is IE5.5 SP2 with patches as good as IE6

Martin

Someone posted the following in the Win98 newsgroup.

Quote:

1st poster:
"you should probably upgrade IE to version 6 SP1. There are a lot of
security fixes in 6 that you need to have."

2nd poster:
"Wrong. IE5.5 SP2, when updated with security patches, is as secure *as any
browser MS has released*. Many find it more stable for Win98 than IE6. The
simple fact is that you are no more likey to be hacked with 5.5 than
6.whatever."

Is this statement true - or total %$&%$£&^

I personally have IE6, but was interested in what everyone thought.

TIA

Yes I agree...Am using WIN98se, and ever since I "upgraded" to IE6 I have had
nothing but problems. All kinds of error messages even when computer is idle.
How do we go back to IE 5.5?

As I stated, I use IE6 and have had no problems with it at all - and I use
Win98SE as well.

First, in answer to your question, if you have updated from IE5.5 to IE6,
then go to Control Panel and select the Add/Remove Programs icon. Find the
Microsoft Internet Explorer entry and click on the Add/Remove button. This
will give you some options of which I think one of them is to roll back to
the last version of Explorer you had on your system. I am not completely
sure about this as I installed IE6 directly and did not do an upgrade. If I
am wrong, I am sure someone will correct me.

Of course, you could use the Repair option, which is one of the options
offered. Maybe that will do the trick. Failing that, you could post your
problem to the microsoft.public.windowsupdate newsgroup and see if they can
help. With what in particular are you having problems? Possibly I can help!?
