Irfanview: Bring back the cat

F

Frank Bohan

For no apparent reason the icon I have associated with graphics files in
Irfanview has changed from a large red dead cat (?) to a tiny version of the
same in a plain white rectangle. The large RDC remains as the icon for the
program itself and on the top title bar -- only the image icon has changed
on the file lists. It's not a major problem, but can anyone tell me how to
bring back the original cat. There do not seem to be any separate .ico files
in Irfanview, and the new icon does not appear in Options > Properties >
Extensions > Miscellaneous. TIA.

What version? I have v. 3.98 and it still has the largish red blob
with some greyish stuff as the icon for files associated with
IrfanView.

All icon resources of IrfanView are directly stored inside the program
file. The standard icon exists in 2 sizes (16x16 and 32x32 pixels).
Change to another one (all other icons displayed are 32x32, only) and
exit the Miscellaneous *and* the Properties menu to save the settings.
After that change back to the first icon.

If that doesn't help: take a look at your Display Properties (Control
Panel). There is an Appearance->Effects page where you can change
icon size and color depth settings.

Frank, that happens to me once in a while when I do an "Open with" on a
file and don't forget to remove the "Always use the selected program to
open this kind of file" checkmark.

This is how I get the larger icon view back (I'm assuming that you're
using XP):

1. Open Windows Explorer and click on Tools/Folder Options...
2. Click on the "File Types" tab
3. Scroll down to the first image file type you want to use the other
icon for. This would be one of the image file types which you have
Irfanview associated with.
4. With the file type highlighted, click on the "Advanced" button in the
lower right hand corner of the Folder Options window.
5. Click on the "Change Icon..." button.
6. Browse to the Irfanview folder (on my computer it's in the
"C:\Program Files\IrfanView" folder) and click on "i_view32.exe" so that
it's selected.
7. Click on the "Open" button.
8. Select the Icon that you want, highlight it and press the "OK" button.
9. "OK" your way back to the Folder Options window and repeat this
process for each file type that's having the problem.

Note that you can of course, also open the Folder Options window from
the Control Panel.

Thanks, John. Following your instructions I found that in FileTypes the
associations had been grabbed by Quick Time, although the files still opened
in Irfanview, which still had the correct file associations. All now seems
well. On to the next problem!!!

From the FAQ (look inside help file):

|Q: What is the IrfanView icon, is this a bear or devil or something else?
|A: This is a red CAT, a road cat. Note, I like cats, but this is a joke ;-)
