In terms of electrical properties, the USB ports on the back of the
computer are the best ones. Some devices have the odd issue with
hubs. And some front USB ports have poor signal transmission,
which can result in errors when packets are sent. So if you want
to do a controlled test, try the device first on a rear USB
port, and then report the symptoms.
The various states you report, seem to be related to the software
installed and present on the computer, and then the fallback
states caused by other available options. It wouldn't show as
the "S drive", unless there was something like USB Mass Storage
that was working. Or a protocol that could do the equivalent
of USB Mass Storage. The fact that something is disappearing,
means the device is no longer detected, or the USB port
has generated an event as if the thing was disconnected.
A possible cause could be power management ("allow the computer
to turn off this device"), but that isn't the likely reason.
If the symptoms seen by using a back USB port are still the
same, I'd also be curious what this utility sees, and for
how long the device enumeration is visible in the window.
UVCView should be able to display the device configuration info,
and the info should stay visible, until the device disappears.

Another thing about hubs, is they work best if they are
powered by a wall wart. A USB hub that relies on bus power
(only power source is the connection to the computer), cannot
support high power devices. There are then limits as to how
much power anything plugged into a passive hub can provide.
