I recently bought a 60GB iPod Photo. I can't seem to upload music, files or
anything else to the darn thing. Long story short, Windows recognizes the
iPod as an external (removable disk) drive on E:. I took all the proprietary
software out of the picture and tried just copying files directly to the
iPod drive. Small files (< 100KB) copy fine, but with anything really large,
it either takes forever or returns an error: "Cannot copy [file]: The
request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."
I'm running Windows XP SP2, and I have 512 MB RAM and an 80 GB hard drive
(about 1/4 full). I'm using USB 2.0 to connect the iPod. My USB printer and
digital camera both work fine. Here's what I've tried so far:
1. Downloaded/installed latest USB drivers
2. Downloaded/installed latest VIA (4in1) drivers
3. Changed iPod from E: drive to I: drive
4. Connected using both USB connections
5. Ran Scandisk on the iPod drive (no errors)
(My anti-virus software has been disabled through all of this.)
I downloaded the latest Apple software and did a full restore on the iPod
itself. After numerous tries, I did get ONE song uploaded to the thing, and
it seems to work and play just fine. So I'm not convinced it's the appliance
(yet).
What I haven't tried is reinstalling Windows (maybe tonight) or hooking the
iPod up to a different PC (tomorrow on my laptop at work).
In the meantime, does anyone have any inspirational thoughts for me? Thanks!
