IPCONFIG results

Two of the results given when this utility is run are:

IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . . . : Yes
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes

Most examples shown all show No as the response. I find no explanation of
these results nor how the setting they appear to report can be changed.
Please respond to the following questions.

1. What is IP Routing and WINS Proxy?
2. What are the steps neccessary to disable these setting?
3. Can either or both of these being enable affect the ability of the
associated computer to be accessed by other computers with these items being
disablede inorder to share filed?

Thanks in advance.

I guess no one knows the answer to my question?
I guess many here can answer such basic questions. But why bother when a
simple Google search will provide each of your answers. May I also suggest
start>help and support>search>wins. Also check the tabs in your tcp/ip
protocol settings.

Thank you for your response.

To some this may seem like a basic question, but to others like me it is
not. I have tried google using WIN PROXY and IP ROUTING as well as IPCONFIG
and have tried the help section. Much information has been found relative
to all of these subjects, but none that answer my question to my
understanding.

What type of network do you have? Do you have a wins server? Do you have a
network consisting of windows and other OS such as unix/linux? Is you
network a peer to peer network? Do you have a windows server on your
network?

Assuming you have windows a peer to peer network, you do not need wins nor
a wins proxy to share files or browse the network. Disable wins in tcp/ip
properties wins tab and enable netbios over tcp/ip..

If your network is more complex, please describe it.

I have a desktop and 2 laptops connected to a router/swicth/Ap combination.
All three computers see each other and the two laptops can share files and
printers. On the ipconfig readout one laptop shows no in both categories
below, while one shows yes in ip routing. The deskop can share files with
the two laptops but the laptops cannot share with the desktop. The desk top
shows WINS Proxy - yes. Other than this all three are the same. Firewall
and anti virus software is not an issue on any of the machines
What I need to know is can the IP routing on one and the WIN Proxy being
enabled on other be causing this problem and if so how do you turn these two
off to resolve the problem.

I do have a windows peer to peer network and see in the TC/ip properties
wins tab to indicate that it is enabled and netbios over tc/ip has been
enabled.

Thanks

Ken
