lan / internet problem

Hi:

I have two computers connected by a hub and both should have broadband
internet access yet one doesn't. The two machines can share files across the
LAN. Here are the results of a ipconfig /all for any who might could shed
light on this...

You probably have a single IP address Internet service. ProsperoXP2 gets an IP
address. Prospero gets no IP address. Let's see what protocols you are running
on the computers.

Look at "browstat status", "net config server", and "net config workstation",
from each computer, and diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely (download browstat!):

Hi Chuck:

Thanks greatly for your help. Here's what I get when I run all the
diagnostic commands/tools you suggested [on the mal machine]:

OK, that's what I expected. You're using IPX/SPX and NetBEUI (get rid of one)
to share files. Are you paying for 2 services? That's ONE specific case, when
I recommend using IPX / SPX.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/one-unique-case-where-ipxspx-may-help.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/one-unique-case-where-ipxspx-may-help.html

BUT, if you're NOT paying your cable company for 2 IP addresses (and if you
were, both computers should have service), you need to replace the hub with a
NAT router. My personal favourite is the Linksys BEFSX41, or for a few dollars
less, the BEFSR41.

If you do that, please get rid of both IPX/SPX and NetBEUI, and enable NetBT, on
both computers.

We do pay for 2 addresses [and get no help from provider] and neither

here?

OK, if you ARE paying for the 2 addresses, you have a problem. Since you say
that Prospero and ProsperoXP2 are sharing files, that rules out a hardware
problem. Prospero has IPV6. Start by removing that.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html

And look at the "net config" logs.
Server is active on
NwlnkIpx (00d009fae6db)
NwlnkNb (00d009fae6db)
NetBT_Tcpip_{B7C5204C-8F46-4B5E-B976-B4236277BE3C} (00d009fae6db)
NetbiosSmb (000000000000)
NwlnkNb is NetBIOS. You do not need both IPX/SPX and NetBIOS.

We removed IPV6 and all other protocols save for the ones listed on your
site. A ping from the working machine to the down machine times out. The
down machine will not ipconfig /renew and gives the error "unable to contact
your dhcp server"... now we can't exchange files across the lan.
