Invalid Product ID?

Well imagine my chagrin when the SP2 updater told me that
my bug-riddled WinXP Pro (version 2002) product ID was
invalid. Does anybody here have any idea what that
means, and what I can do to fix it?

First things first. If the system is having problems then there is no
point to updating to SP2. It won't fix them. The system needs to be in
good shape with no malware, and running fine for SP2 to install and work.

Where did you get XP from? Sounds like you have a pirated copy. The
only recourse is to purchase a valid license.

Greetings --

If you are trying to install a WinXP Service Pack and getting the
following:

The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid

You need to purchase and use a _legitimate_ full retail copy of
WinXP Pro to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation,
using the new CD and Product Key.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP

Remember, you should also report whomever sold/gave you the
pirated software to the pertinent law enforcement agencies; you've
been defrauded.

Actually this can happen with a full retail copy. If you actually have such,
you can call MS customer support, and get a new key. You will need the fancy
label on the retail package, and maybe the bad key. I was fortunate, in that
I have a registered MSDN based license with multiple installs allowed. Made
things a lot simpler.

Usually (but not always) that means your copy of XP Pro is an illegal
copy. Many people have purchased copies of XP Pro not knowing they
bought a copy that had been illegally obtained and duplicated.

Where did you purchase your copy from?

Dont upgrade PCs until you fix the problems.
