InterVideo WinDVD error when I try to play a DVD

When I try to play a DVD on my laptop running Windows XP Pro.
InterVideo says in green "Create overlay failed, please lower your
screen resolution or color depth and try again". I've tried a few
things that haven't worked. Anyone else have this problem or know how
to fix it? Any help would be appreciated. As thorough a description
as possible would be great, thanks for your help.

What are the "few things" that haven't worked? That is, did you
change the screen resolution or color depth, as suggested?

Yes, I did try changing the screen resolution and color.

And does the screen resolution and color settings match the specifications
for the monitor? Is the monitor.ini file for the monitor itself being used
by the computer or has the computer identified the monitor properly?
