Internet time failure: RPC server N/A

I have a nagging problem trying to use the internet time service on the Date
& Time Properties: Internet Time tab. Before AND after resolving my WiFi
802.11g connection problems, every attempt to synchronize with an internet
time server through XPHome's feature, I get a notice that the RPC server is
not available.
I am running a Dell Inspiron 600M with a 1350 wireless mini-PCI card. I
connect through a Netgear WGR614 upgraded to v5.02. I have set port
forwarding to open port 123 for NTP services. However, this happens when hard
wired (RJ-45 Ehternet 10/100/1000) to the router, as well.
Any easy fixes? Am I thinking wrong? Windows firewall is disabled in
deference to the hardware firewall. Help.

Go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services and make sure DCOM Server
Process Launcher is set to automatic and started.

Thank you, but DCOM is already in the suggested state.
Specifically, the error message is: "An error occurred getting the status
of the last synchronization. The RPC server is unavailble."
This is the message with any of the offered servers. Also, Robomagic's
SocketWatch continues to work when installed with XP's time server disabled.
Still looking for the answer, but Happy New Year and thanks again.

Try here: http://www.activexperts.com/activmonitor/functions/ntp/

Also, what does your firewall log show your port forwarding is doing?
Check also TCP/IP properties for your connection, Advanced tab, TCP/IP
filtering and verify that Permit All is selected for all
ports/protocols. Since the error occurs both wired and wireless, I
would suspect the port forwarding is failing for some reason. Are you
forwarding to the correct IP address?

Best I can tell, the Netgear only logs outgoing connections in relation to
content filtering. Successful connections to the internet time server ARE
going through the prot triggering function to port 123 for NTP, network time
protocol. I am successfully making this connection through my desktop
computer on an RJ45 ethernet connection through the same router/wireless
access point.
The laptop has apparently never made a successful time server connection, as
the error shown refers to the prior failure in each attempt.
I am stumped. And, yes, the TCP/IP filtering is disabled and allowing all
port/protocol connections.
