Can't Access Time Servers

P

Peter

A friend of mine is unable to access internet time servers (such as
time.nit.gov) on any of his PCs. All are running WinXP Pro and all are
connected to the internet through a Linksys BEFW11S4 router to a cable
modem. All other internet access seems to be normal.

When he goes to Control Panel | Date & Time | Internet Time and then
clicks on the Update Now button to set the PC's clock he gets this
message:

"An error occurred getting the status of the last synchronization. The
RPC Server is unavailable"

What can he do to correct the problem?

Thanx. Peter

Peter;

Try this:
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | OK |
Scroll down to and double click: Windows Time |
Startup type: Automatic | Click the Start button |
Apply | OK | Close Services

Peter;

Try this:
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | OK |
Scroll down to and double click: Windows Time |
Startup type: Automatic | Click the Start button |
Apply | OK | Close Services

It was already set to Automatic and it was already running. Any other
ideas?

If he is joined to a domain in a network, that takes over time
synchronisation, to its own ideas.

If that is not the case, then having the RPC service being unavailable
is potentially rather serious, and suggests that he may have an
infection by the Blast worm or a friend of it. So a good av check with
up to date signatures, making sure the firewall is up and running, and
then ensuring that the patch against these things is in place. Then in
Admin Tools - Services, look for Windows Time, double click, make sure
that Startup type is set to automatic, and click Start.

I had the same problem. I found these instructions
posted somewhere else. I tried it and it worked
perfectly... [note, do not type the "'s below --
they just show you what to actually type]

1. Start->Run & type: "cmd.exe"
2. At the command prompt type: "net stop w32time"
3. "w32tm.exe /unregister"
4. "w32tm.exe /register"
5. "net start w32time"

then close the window and try it again.

That worked for me. :ee
