Time sync problems

B

Bishoop

A while ago I added a few time servers to the registry. All of them worked
fine, for a while.

Now I notice that when I open the Internet Time tab under Date and Time
Properties I have the following message:

An error occurred getting the status of the last synchronization. The PRC is
not available.

If I click Update Now the same error message appears again.

How can I sort this out?

Thanks

Hi Bishoop

Start with the basics :) Go to Start | Run, type services.msc <enter>
and check that the Windows Time service is actually running. You might
also want to check whether your firewall is blocking it.

Thanks for the tip.

The service is/was set to "Automatic" but had not started. I started it
manually and was able to update the time via various time servers.

Can you help me to find out why the service was not starting even though
optioned of Automatic.

Thanks again.

I rebooted the PC, something I do very infrequently, and the Windows Time
service started.

Maybe you have a clue as to why it stopped in between bootups

I appreciate your help.

Hi Bishop,

Did you add a PalmOS based system recently. The error that
you quoted is one that Palm users will get if the time sync
PRC file on there Palm is not responding or the Palm is not
connected. Most Palm time sync programs can have the conduit
set to only run when a Palm is actually connected and
hotsyncing rather than every time the computer sync with the
time server.

Did you set recovery to restart the service?

Check and see if your time service sropped after an automatic update.

Nope, no Palm OS.

Thanks

It's very possible that it did stop after an update. When I checked it was
set to automatic. After rebooting everything seems fine.

Thanks

Hello again :)

Great, I'm glad you've got it working now. I don't know of any
particular reason why it should have stopped when set to Automatic; it
could perhaps have been something to do with an update, as another
poster suggested, or maybe there was just a system glitch of some kind.
Is there any clue in the Event Viewer?

No clue in Event Viewer, not even a entry that it failed to update.

Oh well, all is well that ends well.

Thanks again for your interest and help.
