Internet Problem after upgrade

I just upgraded my OS from ME to XP, and now I can't
access the internet. When the computer turns on, it says
I am connected, as I get a message saying "You are
connected to the internet, would you like to set up
your .Net passport?"
When I check my router's configuration menu, it does
indeed verify that I'm connected, but my browsers, MSN,
and the like don't make the connection. I tried
releasing and then renewing the IP, as instructed in the
router's instruction manual, but it won't let me renew my
IP. I can release it, but I can't renew. It says "An
error occured while renewing interface Local Area
Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request
has timed out."
I'm assuming this is an XP-related issue, since it worked
fine before the upgrade, but my wife's computer works
just fine, and she is running XP. Any suggestions?

Try reinstalling your network card drivers. Make sure you are not using
Windows Internet Connection Sharing with a router. Can you contact the
router via the web interface? I assume you've got either dsl or cable
since you've got a router. Did you power-cycle the modem and router?
