Internet Explorer opens in reduced size instead of Maximized

This drives me nuts. I have been using Windows 98 for years and just bought a new Dell with XP. Common to both is the fact that when I open an IE browser, it sometimes opens in reduced size. In trying to make a Maximized shortcut for my favorite web-sites, I take these steps

1) Open an IE browser by clicking on the icon on th
task bar (it opens maximized)
2) go to Yahoo, then Yahoo mail (not that tha
matters, as I've tested it with other web-sites)
3) Right click within the page and make a shortcut o
the desktop
4) close the browser
5) click on the shortcut. It opens in reduced size!!!!! ARRRRGGG

I have right clicked on the Taskbar IE icon, selected Properties, Shortcut, Run, and selected Maximized. No change. Obviously, Windows keeps a switch somewhere to determine if a window opens Maximized or reduced. But I don't know where. Please help

put your mouse cursor on the bottom right corner of the minimised window &
drag to the size you want. Close the window with File/Close (not the red X).
This *should* retain the size .. if not - post back here

funny, that does allow me to save the shortcut in the size I close it (almost maximized). But it won't let me save it maximized. I know thats a small point, but i bought a large monitor and I like to use the whole thing (without manually maximizing it every time I use it). This still drives me nuts. Thanks though.
