Internet Explorer no longer connects after about 5 minutes

When I boot up everything works fine for 5 minutes. After
that none of the browsers will connect anymore. This
includes Firefox, netscape and opera. I can still connect
to update servers, instant messengers, email using outlook
and newsgroups.

I am running windows xp pro with an amd 1800+, 512 mb
ram. ISP is cable and no router, just a modem.

I recently played with msconfig to stop a file called
vsmon.exe from starting. Apparently this file was related
to the worm_rbot virus. The system is now clean of
spyware and virus. (Updated Norton's and adaware) I am
running a multiple OS system and windows ME runs fine,
Windows XP has the problem.

Searching the net has indicated that a possible solution
is to return the msconfig to its original state. I do not
want to run a known virus to make it work. Vsmon.exe is
also associated with Zonelab's firewall but I have never
used it.

Before I reformat, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Kevin

Kevin,

Are you saying you do not use a firewall? Or you do not use whatever
Vsmon.exe is? I run Zone Alarm Pro and I have no entry for Vsmon.exe in my
msconfig startup applet. If this file is connected to a virus it should not
be present on your system if you have cleaned up your hard drive. If you
have it in a quarantine folder of some kind (I don't run Norton so I don't
know about that) delete it.
