Internet Explorer icon renamed.

For some reason tonight on my home computer my internet explorer icon renamed
itself to "54". I walked away from it for probably about a half hour and I
have my firewall turned on (Norton Internet Security 2004) and my wireless
connection is secured with Mac Address Filtering and Wap. I tried running
system restore but won't restore. I tried uninstalling IE6 then rebooting
and reinstalling and that didn't work either. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi Mike :)
Windows XP SP2 and IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158

Thank you for the information. :)

First, do the following and make sure there is no scumware on your system
causing the problem. Even if you have already run some of the programs, run
them again according to the instructions in the information below:

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs
below, download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

You should also get a copy of WINSOCKXPFIX available at:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
and
WinsockXP Fix- WinXP
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
with instructions, at
http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm
Also
From LavaSoft- all versions of Windows-
http://digital-solutions.co.uk/lavasoft/whndnfix.zip
(NOTE: It is reported that in XP SP2, the command netsh winsock reset
will fix this problem without the need for these programs.)

or ........

Winsock Fix Utility
http://www.dfwonline.net/files/WinsockFix.zip

If that does not resolve the problem, then do a repair of your OS:

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378/EN-US/

But, before repairing OE6 SP2 you will have to remove Windows XP Service
Pact 2 from Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs. Then use the last
method in this article:

If these steps do not resolve your problem, or you need help with the above,
please post back to this thread with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

I've cleaned off all the spyware off my machine with Ad-Aware 6, Spybot
Search & Destroy, CWShredder and the new Microsoft AntiSpyware beta copy.

I did all of the following steps you gave me and I still have the "54" under
my Internet Explorer icon after all that work. No error messages came about.

I first uninstalled XP sp2 then did a repair install of xpsp1 which didn't
help. I ran the sfc /scannow and that didn't do anything either.

Hi Mike :)

You might have a corrupted icon or component. You can try the following and
see if it helps:

If by chance the files needed for a repair from the Add/Remove Programs are
not available, you can use the XP startup disk to add the components to the
computer.

I fixed the problem. If you right click and choose rename this will work.
I'm so used to no being able to rename it that I didn't even think about it.
Thanks for your help.
