Internet Connection - Validation?

D

Don

Some (many? all?) programs appear not to be able to detect that I'm
connected to the internet even though I am. Is there some setting I'm
overlooking or is there some type of test that I could run to
determine this behavior? I'm running XPSP2 with all patches/updates.
Noteworthy is that this is an almost "new" system connected to to an
Actiontec DSL modem via a Marvell Yukon 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet
Controller. In my old system using the same modem but with different
controllers I don't recall ever seeing this problem. Firefox doesn't
seem to be affected but IEx V7 does (as well as many other programs
that want to "see" a connection before proceeding. Most of these
programs will functiion property if "forced" just not automatically
when first invoked. BTW, I now invoke the ipconfig /release and
/renew on bootup since that appeared to work most times when done
manually. OK, that's it. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Since your release to the IP and reboot is solving the problem then you have
malwares on your computer and your winsock is corrupted.
Go through this cleaning procedure and report back your progress:

1... First, try to clean up your caches, Internet files and delete cookies
by doing this:
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Taps:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
Then click on Programs Tab and click Manage Add-Ons and Disable all non
Verified Add-Ons (You should Renable them later one-by-one and see the
culprit and update it or remove it.

=Run a scan from here online:
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx
Download Avast Cleaner from here:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-virus-cleaner.html
Lots of tools to download and disinfect your machine:

2... And also for malwares from here:

Run disk Clean Up and Defrag in safe mode, then Open run command and type in:
sfc /scannow click [OK]
Note the space between sfc_/

open a run command and type in:
ipconfig /flushdns click [OK]
ipconfig /renew click [OK]
netsh winsock reset click [OK]
Or this winsock fixer:

Thanks for your suggestions. Although I protect my system with AVG
and Zonealarm Suite (malware protection only), as well as weekly scans
with Spybot S&D, Ad-aware, hijackthis, and scan for rootkits
regularly, I followed your suggestions exactly.

Results:

1. no virii, no malware.
2. sfc /scannow ran normally (but not in safe mode) and terminated
normally with no output of any kind.
3. winsock fix run followed by reboot.

No change in system performance. Example: I use mailwasher pro to
filter my email accounts. When the program starts it notifies me that
the automatic email scan was not performed because there is no
internet connection. But clicking on "Check mail" executes normally.
My weather bug never updates as it's supposed to do - I must do
manually.

So, there is a flag/value somewhere that's not getting set. I just
don't know where to look or how to proceed. BTW, "repairing" the
connection doesn't fix the mailwasher problem either. So for now I'll
just live with the problem.

Is there any chance that either vmware or MS virtual PC installation
could be causing this?

Hi Don,
I will try to uninstall the weather Bug application and clean up all traces
left behind and run a system File Checker again then Defrag in Safe Mode.
Also try to Disable Non-Verified Add-Ons on your browser and see if the
issue will resolve then you can Renable them one-by-one and see the culprit,
it more likely from your description it is a Add-ons for application causing
this issue.
Also try to perform a clean Boot that will show you clearly which line is
the culprit in your case.
I have seen it before the weather bug can cause some issue, for some reason,
a corrupted application or an outdated version or horked installation for it.
HTH.

Thnx again Nass. I guess I wasn't clear in my "results" remarks: I
did do everything you mentioned in your 1st message and thus your 2nd
set of suggestions had already been done. Further, I use a program
(freeware) called Weather Watcher from SingerCreations.com. I've used
this program for several years now and it has never caused any
problems. It has only been since I installed XP on this particular
machine with these particular controllers that I've experienced this
"internet connection" problem. That's why I'm somewhat stumped.
So to review, all non-verified Add-ons were disabled, system disk
"cleaned" and defragged, winsock 'repaired', etc. I will uninstall
Weather Watcher to make absolutely sure that it's not causing the
problem. In fact I may just start uninstalling everything that could
even remotely affect the internet connection to see what happens.
Again, many thanks for your kind suggestions.
