Hello,
I am having a problem with the Internet Connection Status showing an
incorrect state. In this specific case, the network connection icon of the
dial-up connection disappeared while a connection was still present. A
second computer on the LAN via Internet Connection Sharing showed the status
correctly as 'Connected'. When I opened the network connection dialog the
status showed 'Disconnected', but when I hit F5 to refresh the window, the
status changed to 'Connected' and the notification icon appeared.
In 99.9% of all cases the connection state is displayed correctly, and the
notification icon is present, but once in a while it does not work. This
behavior is not repeatable; however, it is a real problem, as Dial-up
Internet is paid on a per-minute basis around here, and one needs a reliable
indication of when a connection is established. The PC is configured to
auto-disconnect when the connection is idle, but I am not sure if this works
if Windows thinks the connection is disconnected anyway.
A few side notes:
Two Windows XP SP 2 computer connected via LAN, Internet connection sharing
enabled on the PC with the Fritz-PCI ISDN modem.
The user was logged on as a member of the group 'Users'.
If the network connection dialog is viewed using a different user via RunAs,
the connection status (and everything else) does not refresh automatically.
The second computer is often not showing the 'Internet Gateway' connection
icon in the network connection dialog. This happens far more frequently than
the previous case, where the computer with the modem does not show the
connection state correctly. Fix is to disconnect and reconnect the PC from
the LAN.
I'd be very happy if someone found a solution to this problem.
