Internet connection sharing error 765

I'm getting very frustrated trying to get this to work. I have a laptop
on a wireless network, accessing the internet through a wireless
router. I want to wire a desktop to it and share internet. I can get
the two to hook up with a crossover cable, but only if I manually set
IP addresses, if I try to leave it automatically assigned I get limited
or no connectivity. When I try to enable ICS on the laptop I get error
765: ICS can't be enabled because a LAN connection is already
configured with the IP address that is required for automatic IP
addressing. But nothing on my network has that address. My router did
have it, but i changed it and no, I can't ping 192.168.0.1. This makes
no sense, please help!

Aside from the burning question, "Why not continue to use the router?" ...

I'd also ask, "Did you manually set one of the network card addresses in the
ICS host PC to 192.168.0.1?"

ICS is sometimes difficult to get running correctly and requires a computer
to be always-on. Use a router and avoid the headaches.

I don't have a wireless card for the desktop.

Yes. I tried settting the wired LAN in the laptop to 192.168.0.1
and ICS still wouldn't start.

I don't have a wireless card for the desktop and the router is in
another room. Yes, I tried to set the laptop's wireless adapter to
192.168.0.1 and ICS still wouldn't start.

Herein lies your problem:
Yes. I tried setting the wired LAN in the laptop to 192.168.0.1
and ICS still wouldn't start.

You can't do that. Windows must be able to control the IP addresses of the
network interfaces. If you properly configure ICS it will handle all IP
addresses on both cards in the host PC and on the guest PCs as well.

I still say get a router. ;-)

I tried letting windows control them too, there is no 192.168.0.1 and
I still get the error. There must be a way to fix this!
