Internal laptop modem HSP56 MR-8640L will not install

Dear Friends,
I have a laptop made by eisystem. It has an internal software modem HSP56
MR-8640L. The machine was build for PC World and came with it's own copy of
xp home with extra drivers etc for the modem and other stuff. The disc went
missing and I upgraded the machine and put xp home (with sp2) on it without
the extra drivers. I found all the drivers necessary for stuff like the sound
and cd drive etc, but when I installed the modem driver (which I got from the
PC World support site) I got an error, "Device cannot start. (Code
10)"....I've scoured the internet for different drivers and I've tryed lots
of them. Sometimes I get a Code 28. In the modems section of the Control
Panel it comes up as Installed but 'Not functional'. I cannot think of a
reason why it will not install? Any suggestion, guesses or answers would be
most gratefully recieved.
I thought perhaps the upgrade to sp2 might be the problem? But I did find a
driver (albeit for another laptop) that was for the same modem on an an xp
home system with sp2 but of course that didn't work. I also thought that
perhaps it has something to do with the fact that I have been using an
external ethernet modem on this laptop and setup a direct link with my
desktop PC. This has enabled me to get online and update things more quickly
and so on but I can't see how that would interfere with the setup of an
internal 56k dial up modem?? The machine does not belong to me and I have to
return it shortly and the pple will need dialup. Please if you've got even an
inkling of what's wrong let me know...yours SH.

Tryed it in safe mode danny boy but it didn't make any difference at all,
except that it told me that the changes wouldn't take effect until I
restarted the computer, which made me all hopeful, and when I started it up I
looked and everything was exactly the same...Anyway, I'm glad you suggested
that, at least it was worth a try. If you've got any more suggestions please
let me know..I think it is something simple..perhaps a MB bios upgrade could
help? What do you think? Although I don't know if there is one..Thanks again,
SH
