Internal error when trying to renew DHCP lease

Greetings. I'm on a small project trying to set up a home network for my
brother-in-law. Earlier today I had both his laptop and desktop (which runs
Win2k Pro) connected to the internet (DSL, through a wired/wireless router)
just fine. My next step was to have the desktop share its printer with his
laptop. I had to configure the laptop a bit, but the only change I made on
the desktop was to set up sharing on the printer. I rebooted both machines,
and the network connection on the desktop no longer works. The network
appears connected as far as windows in concerned and responds properly to the
cable being disconnected/reconnected. However, no traffic gets through,
ipconfig shows an address of 0.0.0.0, and 'ipconfig /renew' causes the
following error:

"The following error occurred when renewing adapter Local Area Connection:
An internal error occurred. Disconnect and reconnect the network interface or
reboot the machine."

The other end of the cable is in the router. I know this much is ok, as I
can connect the same cable to a different PC, release/renew, and have no
problems.

I've tried the following:
- Replacing the network cable
- Replacing the network adapter (PCI card)
- Switching to a different PCI slot
- Upgrading drivers
- Unsharing the printer (worth a shot)
- Rebooting. A lot.

I'm at my wit's end here... I have no idea where to proceed. Any suggestions
would be appreciated.

(The PC was manufactured by Tiger (Electronics?). It has an Athlon processor
and 384MB RAM. The replacement network adapter is a Belkin F5D5000 PCI 10/100
Ethernet card.)

Ok, I'm going to chalk it up as a DHCP client problem. As I was about to
pack it in for the day, I realized I hadn't tried static IPs yet... I
disabled the DHCP server in the router and configured both the laptop and
desktop for static IPs, and they run just fine.

Wish I could have fixed the root of the problem, but considering all the
*other* issues I've run into on this project, I'm content to leave it in
working condition for now.

I am having the exact same issue with my Mother-in-laws PC. Could this
be an "in-law" issue? Just kidding. But seriously, I am trying to find
a solution other than a full format and reload for her, and I'm not
having much luck. I did a repair installation without success. I'm
running Windows 2000/sp4 on a Dell Inspirion 4100 with 256MB of memory.

Have you made any progress on this issue? Does anyone else have any
ideas relating to this issue?
