Windows 2000 DHCP client laptops do not lease/renew address

We have a couple of laptop users running Windows 2000 Pro.
that roam between various networks. On occasion, the
laptop will not obtain an IP address on boot. In order to
make the unit work, the user must manually do an
IPCONFIG /RELEASE, then IPCONFIG /RENEW. This will make
the laptop obtain a new address and work normally. Short
of writing a script to run at logon, is there a way to
correct this (registry change?)?

When the laptops are first connected to the network, what
IP address do they have? Are they not seeing the DHCP
server or do they still have the IP address from the
previous network?

One laptop has the automatic IP configuration enabled, so
it defaults to the 2000 config. The other laptop shows
the IP address from the network it was on last.

The problem only appears once in a while, and not
necessarily on the same networks each time.
