Internal Error 2753

Guest

I uninstalled the previous version of Microsoft AntiSpyware as advised and am
now trying to install Windows Defender BETA 2. The installation always fails
with the prompt "Internal Error 2753. gcasInstall Helper.exe." I have
Windows XP with Service Pack 2. I've downloaded the program several times in
case the original download was corrupted. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

There's no requirement to do the uninstall--I've done it both ways, mostly
without the uninstall.

Is your install file called:

WindowsDefender.msi

?

Yes, that's the correct file, NOT the 64 file. As I posted, I've downloaded
it several times and run it and have always got the prompt about
three-quarters through the installation. I've done a file and registry
search and don't have the file agcInstallHelper.exe in the system. Thanks
again.

I asked because that name is one I associate with Microsoft Antispyware,
rather than Windows Defender. My guess about what is happening is that you
are reaching a point in the install where the installer is either removing
Microsoft Antispyware, or working at migrating settings, and there's a
failure of some sort.

I think my suggestion would be to reinstall the previous version. You can
get it here:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_microsoft_antispyware/?29

be sure to click on the .701 version in the right column, and then click on
download this version.

If you can successfully reinstall .701--be sure you are signed in as an
administrator--I think the upgrade to Windows Defender may go smoothly.
However--that's a big IF! Keep me posted.

Bill,

As a Consultant, I'm hearing more of the 2753 error. Is there any further
news on this front?

While Windows Installer Cleaner and a reinstall of Antispyware often
resolves it, it doesn't always work. There are a couple of reports that a
reinstall of Windows Installer 3.1 V2 has been successful as well.

Thanks - this is the only message on this error that I've spotted so far in
these groups.
