intel upgrade

hope this is the correct group to ask this.
I'm looking to upgrade my cpu from 1.7ghz to 2.4 or higher. Does the skt
size play a part? I don't have any packaging to find what i have now, have
looked at the processor but the wording has come off. It may be 692 or 694. I
have an Intel celeron 1.7ghz , but don't know the cache size. any ideas or
recommendations for an upgrade?

Before you change the CPU, you need to find out exactly what CPUs are
supported by your motherboard. You'll need to check your system
documentation or check with the manufacturer.

Be prepared for the possibility that you can *not* do what you want
without also replacing your motherboard.

Actually Timbo I would save my money and buy both a new motherboard and a
new Intel Core2duo chip. That way you will have a major increase in
speed..the way way your thinking most likely just gives you a 10% boost...if
that.

That would also involve a new video card (PCI-E) and new memory. Probably a
new power supply, and very likely a new hard drive and also in order.
Depending on the current motherboard, there may not be much upgrade path
left other than an essentially new system. At a certain point incremental
hardware upgrades no longer make sense.

Actually Phil I think your right...especially the memory part. The rest
depends upon what the hell he is actually running.
Having just(one month ago) gone thru the process I bought a Mobo,an Intel
Core2duo E6420 as well as a couple of DDR2 modules. The rest of the parts I
had....Case,Good PSU,PCI-E video,2 SATA2 HD,2 DVD Burners.All of those parts
are at least 16 months old ( I am looking for a new vid card...$$$) and were
bought with future upgrades in mind. The vid part is still fairly
good..better than an 8600 but an 8800 is better.
