Insufficient privileges to run gpedit

I don't recall the exat error message but here is my problem.

I had installed conpugaurd conerstone on my computer and it crashed one day.
I had to do a repair install of WinXp Pro. That worked fine.

But afterwards i noticed that all policies that I had setup were gone...
(Or so it seems... but weird things that happen lead me to now believe some
still remain)

Anyway, when I tried going into mmc and adding snapins I am told I don't
have appropriate privileges!!! If I try to run gpedit same thing. I can't
make any system changes. I have an admin account!!

So then I tried logging into the default admin account and it too is denied
access to gpedit.

Short of a format and reinstall... what can I do?

Could the user profile be corrupted? Both admin accounts??? that would be
weird!
The hive need to be restored...???

Help me!

Formatting this computer is not something I want to do.
It is a pain staking 4-6 hours process of software install and upgrades.

What could cause an admin to lose his privileges?

Thank you!!!

A repair XP install is actually an upgrade installation - meaning any
program residue remains - the repair function is more suitable when sysem
files are corrupt or missing.

System Restore is the first option following a problem application
installation - you no longer have that option.

Have you tried Safe Mode and/or used RegEdit to search for "conpugaurd
(compuguard) cornerstone" entries?

Uninstall " compuguard cornerstone " , reboot and see what happens .
Might sound silly but I do that if software doesn`t work on my comp ;
or uninstall and do a system restore .

Thanks AJR.

Unfortunately I have already tried this.

I did the repair install thinking that the registry
was corrupted. I can explain a lock out like this
no other way...

Thanks for responding. I was on another
VERY popular forum and got no responses.

The probllem really isn't the software.
But I do think it is the culprit in corrupting
the registry or some config file somewhere.....

Now however I have no highlevel admin access rights.

I did uninstall it at one time and nothing
happened. But thank you for the advice.
Maybe I'll try it again. You never know.

Thanks.

Thank you Mark,

I am going to try this ASAP.
If it works I owe you a snickers bar!!

p.s
AJR
I got a little mixed up with other steps I'd taken to resolve this.
I had also repair reinstalled to try to correct any file corruption.

As for repair install I mention in my first post. I had no other choice.
The way CornerStone works... I was backed up against a 3 sided wall.
My head was in the noose so to speak... I was a fish out of water.. lol..
I'll shut up now.

Incidentally, all system restore is also not working on this computer.
Probably because I have no rights to access it... ??? But that is another
issue for another day.

Well I tried and was successful at resetting security settings to default.
But the problem remains.

I can't run GPEDIT.

I still get the error: Unable to load application, you don't have the
appropriate rights.
It's something like that.

Any other ideas.

thanks!!!)

HAZAA!!! HURRAH!!! BOOYA!

I think resetting the security rights had an affect on the system.
In that this time when I went into EventVwr I was able to see an error
for today's date show up about 12 times. It, for the first time, mentioned
the registry.pol file as not being valid. This is where the problem was.
I renamed the extendion to .old and then tried running gpedit.msc.

It worked!!!

Finally!!!

I hate computers!! And I love them....

Thank you to all who chipped in with a helpful suggestion.

I have been at this for months. Two days on this list and
I have been with your help able to fix it!

What a Relief!!! *HUGE SIGH OF RELIEF*

Thank, now I am off to set all rights and privileges again.
At least it will only take about 1 hour rather than 6 hours.

Much better if you ask me...

Possible Resolution to Lost privileges from error: not appropriate rights
Go to C:\windows\system32\GroupPolicy\User\ and rename Registry.pol

Keywords:
GpEdit not accessible
Access denied GpEdit
Can't open gpedit
unable to run gpedit
gpedit crashes
