insufficent temp directory space

hi. for some reason, i'm getting a "The decompression of the %s failed.
There may not be enough free disk space in the TEMP directory" when i try to
install some programs. I know I have enough space so I'm not sure why this
message is even coming up. I've already tried cleaning up temp files but it
stills gives me that error. Is there any way for me to change the TEMP
directory quota or is there something I should be deleting...? I just
reinstalled WinXP today so I dont think it's a matter of too many old
files.....
thanks in advance.

Hi,

Make sure you are getting all temp folders:

C:\Windows\temp
C:\documents and settings\username\local settings\temp

So what ARE these programs that you are trying to install? Games? Lots of
*old* games were not coded to handle large drives; i.e., they expect a max
partition size of only 2GB. As a result, their computation of free space
ends up doing modulo arithmetic due to truncation from a too-small sized
variable. You actually need to delete enough files to get far enough away
from the 2GB boundary, or add more files, like in the temp directory, to
move past the 2GB boundary.

Since you never mentioned WHICH programs you are trying to install, no one
can experienced with the program can offer specific help.

1. What exact programs? Old win95 apps perhaps?

2. Got at least 10 gig free space on c:?

I've gotten that message when I tried installing Netscape 4.7. I've
installed it on this computer prior to the reinstalling of the OS this
weekend and never had a problem with it before. I have 6 gigs available on
my HD.

Did you try using the Disk Cleanup wizard?

Netscape 4.7 is pretty old so it might've been developed back when drives
were under 2GB for the maximum partition size. Netscape is now at version
8.0.1 (http://browser.netscape.com/ns8/). Just like old games coded before
drives got bigger than 2GB (and the OS could handle partitions larger than
that, along with the BIOS handling the larger drive), a really old version
of Netscape might suffer the same coding shortsightedness.

i understand that there is a new version out there. it's just that i never
had any problems with the installation before whenever i reinstall my OS.
Thanks tho.

i have a second hard drive (120 gigs) and it's still the same. thanks
for the help tho.
Yes, but the system drive is too small. Even if you install programs to
the second drive, files from those programs also go onto the system
drive. The Temp folders are in the system drive. Either replace the
small system drive with a larger one or uninstall programs on it and
reinstall them onto the larger second drive. Move any data files onto
the second drive. It's always a good idea in any case to have your data
on a separate drive or partition from the operating system.
