installing windows 200

The drive size is ok, it wont be an issue when installing Windows 2000.
The only thing being that one might preffer having it partitioned into
maybe something like 25 gigs for Windows and applications and the rest
for data, but that is not really an issue affecting Windows 2000 setup.

The drive might not at the right location on the cable or you need to
put the jumper back in and have the drive jumpered as master or single
drive, consult the documentation for your drive. Get that done before
you try anything else.

hey John,here's a bizare twist,I couldn't install windows 2000,so I tried
installing my copy of win xp home edition from my own pc and it worked,I
realize I won't be able to use it indefinetly cause it is already registered
on one pc,the question is why won't windows 2000 install, are the 4 setup
disks the key at this point, and if so how can I install 2000 while XP is
installed on the same pc,I will make the 4 setup disks at the office and try
again,any ideas?

thank a million John

I'm guessing the difference is the controller driver is included with the
Windows XP installation media.

I think probably like Dave said: (maybe) "the controller driver is
included with the Windows XP installation media." Maybe you need to
have the drivers on a diskette and press F6 early on and have Windows
2000 load them. Either that or Windows 2000 doesn't want to install on
a secondary (slave) drive and XP isn't bothered by it. The good news is
that your hardware appears to be fine if XP can install properly on it.

As for installing Windows 2000 while XP is on there forget about it,
you need to have a partition for each operating system and being that
you can't use the XP copy you are just going end up with another fine
mess doing a dual install like that! Boot with the Windows 2000 cd and
have it format the drive... if it does get that far then we know that
the drive controller drivers shouldn't be an issue. Very early on in
this thread Dave explained how to do a clean install, re-read the
instructions that he provided.

John,
I've actually seen (several times) where the text mode portion of setup
completes. Partitions and formats the drive without error and as soon as the
reboot and attempt at gui mode portion of setup you get something to the
effect of no hard disks or operating system found.

Might be something else as you mentioned but F6 is worth a try.

Thanks for pointing that out, I always figured if setup could see and
format the drive things were fine.

second problem is that a new pop window has shown up on my pc and it asks to
insert the cd or floppy with a file called

Just so we know..... does this mean F6 worked or you abandoned the idea
altogether?

It might be found on your HP product CD-Rom.
