To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

Setup inspects your computer's hardware configuration and then begins to
install the Setup and driver files. When the Windows 2000 Professional
screen appears, press ENTER to set up Windows 2000 Professional.

Read the license agreement, and then press the F8 key to accept the terms of
the license agreement and continue the installation.

When the Windows 2000 Professional Setup screen appears, all the existing
partitions and the unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard
disk. Use the ARROW keys to select the partitions Press D to delete an
existing partition, If you press D to delete an existing partition, you must
then press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System
partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. Repeat this
step for each of the existing partitions When all the partitions are deleted
press F3 to exit setup, (to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with
your new install) then restart the pc then when you get to this point in
setup again select the unpartitioned space, and then press C to create a new
partition and specify the size (if required). Windows will by default use
all available space.

Be sure to apply SP4 and these two below to your new install before
connecting to any network. Internet included. (sasser, msblast)

When you install you should make sure that no external devices are
connected to the pc other than the mouse, keyboard and monitor. If no
external devices are connected and you can't get past the "Setup is
inspecting your computer's hardware configuration..." screen you have a
few thing that you can try:

1- Press and hold the power button to force a shutdown, then restart the
computer.

2- Verify for BIOS updates or reset the BIOS to default settings.

3- Use the debug version of NTDETECT.COM to determine why Setup is
hanging at the "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware
configuration: See:

HOW TO: Use Ntdetect.chk to Identify Hardware Problems in Windows 2000

(NT4 version, offers additional information to KB320040)

4- Selecting a Computer Type Before Windows NT Setup Begins

5- Run hardware diagnostic utilities.

6- Remove suspect non essential hardware from the computer before you
install Windows.

thanks John, I created the four setup disks, and then the system hangs when
inspecting the hardware.in the bios I don't have the option to change to
default setting for some reason,my next step I guess is to use NTDETECt.CHK
and just like creating the four setup disks, will have to do from another pc,
if you have more info I would appreciate it

thank you

Not much else to add, perhaps this:

Computer Hangs While Setup Is Inspecting Hardware Configuration
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q252349

It says maybe removable media (zip drive, etc) is not properly
configured in the BIOS and it can cause the type of problem you are
experiencing. Other than that I just want to emphasize that you should
have no printers, flash drives, usb drives, external modem etc attached
to the pc, only the mouse, keyboard and monitor should be attached.

Sounds like hardware failure if the keyboard is inoperative at POST

Sounds like there is or are hardware problems with the computer. Not
being able to get past "...Inspecting Hardware Configuration..." and now
the keyboard is dead, doesn't sound too good. A couple of questions:

1- How old is the computer?

2- You say "screen is blank" what do you mean? When you switch the
computer on do you see BIOS/POST information and logo's / information
from the pc manufacturer? Do you at least see a blinking cursor, or
something?

If you want to reset the BIOS to factory defaults (which I would try
before running over the computer with a truck) remove the CMOS battery.
The battery is on the motherboard, look in your hardware/motherboard
manual or just look at the motherboard and you will find it. BE
CAREFUL! The battery might be held in place by delicate clips that can
be easily broken! Unplug the computer and pull out the battery and
leave it out for a few minutes (some say 15 to 30 minutes, but I don't
see why so long) then reinstall it and the BIOS should be reset to
factory defaults. You might also be able to reset the BIOS by changing
a jumper on the board, that information would be in the hardware manual.

If that doesn't work then you will have to try to run hardware
diagnostics utilities or consider whether or not it is worth paying to
have a competent hardware repair person look at the pc. If the computer
is still under warranty call the manufacturer or vendor for service.

I like the truck idea lol,but I am giving it one more shot.I removed the
battery and you were right it set the bios to default values, I recently
bought a 80 gig western digital drive, for my present pc,so I insttaled on the
other system,I followed western digital proceedure to a T,at the end of the
setup,it says boot windows 2000 from CD,now we are back to the start,( setup
is inspecting your computer's hardware configueration ) and it is just
hanging, question John,is it possible that it take a while to check the
configueration?maybe I should it this way overnight and see what
happens,thanks

one thing I forgot to mention,I booted from WESTERN DIGITAL CD in order to
prepare the drive, but at one point I must check a few boxes,I use the tab key
to move from box to box, howvwer when I need to move to the box that says
next, I am unable to use the tab key or for that matter the mouse, the mouse
is not detected, as you can see this is very bizare, the keyboard works but
the mouse doesn't at this point, thank John

You can leave it overnight and see what happens but the way the computer
is behaving is not normal. Remove ALL unnecessary hardware, PCI cards
like sound cards, modems etc. If the motherboard has on board video,
plug the monitor in there and remove the video card from the video bus.
If you get Windows 2000 installed you can install these things after.
Use the debug version of ntdetect to see if you can isolate the
problem. If that doesn't work you will have to bring the pc to a
computer shop.

You could also run a ram test.

John here is an update,I manageD to overcome the mouse problem and manage to
use keyboard functions,i proceeded with preparing the hard disk with the
western digital cd,and it shows the new drive as a secondary master when in
fact it is the only hard disk, however it shows another drive which it claims
is the primary master, this primary master is not highlighted like the
secondary master, when I say ok it says " WARNING THE DRIVE YOU SELECTED MAY
BE YOUR BOOT DRIVE"
which is the new drive I am trying to setup, anyway I follow through with
this proceedor and at the end it still hangs on CONFIGUERING MY HARDWARE
question? How would removing all cards, video, sound etc,HELP

John thanks for you patience, here is another update,I have managed to
overcome all previous problems, here is where I am at,during the process it
asks, I think, if I should use the existing controller on the motherboard and
I did that but it did not work,so I tried " CREATE A NEW CONTROLLER " and
that did not work either,at the end of the process western says you are now
ready to install your new drive, just reboot and follow onscreen
instructions, instructions that never come.when I tried rebooting to the hard
disk, the system is looking for a boot device and when I tried to reboot
from the windows 2000 cd and I get the following messages
COULDN'T OPEN THE BOOT PARTITION TO CHECK FOR A SIGNATURE
SETUP IS INSPECTING YOUR COMPUTER'S HARDWARE CONFIGUERATION
John I think I am very close to solving my problem with your help, can you
suggest
anything else,is it possible that this is where the windows 2000 setup disks
come into play,if this is the case I had to use one floppy for something to
try and I have to download them again from elsewhere

thanks again John

John John

Change the jumper on the drive to make it master and place it on the
proper position on the cable. Unless you have special needs, or want to
configure for multiple operating systems, you want the drive on which
you install Windows 2000 to be shown as master (hard drive 0 (zero) on
controller 0 . How big is the drive? Don't remove other cards until
you get the drive set the proper way. Removing cards would eliminate
them as possible problems that cause setup to hang.

John

it's a 80 gig drive,the previous drive was a maxtor 20 gig,so I just
connected it the same way it was before,I used the cable supplied with the
western drive directly connected to the motherboard, and I removed the jumper
pin, because it was the only drive on the cable, I just want to configure one
operating system windows 2000
at the end of the process it doesn't show up as a master it shows up as
secondary which makes no sense to me,the cr rom has it's own cable to the
motheboard and so has the floppy drive
