Installing programs on Windows XP designed for an earlier version?

I am trying to install educational software on my computer that is designed
for Windows 95/98. I've searched through microsoft's websites and hit only
one help option: the connection wizard which was unable to help me change my
settings to install the programs. Can anyone help?
Thanks!

You could try right clicking on the program's setup file (the one you are
trying to install - usually setup.exe). After right clicking on the file
select Properties from the drop down menu. In properties click the
compatibility tab and then place a tick (by clciking with your mouse) in the
box next to the 'run this program in compatibility mode for.' Next clcik
the arrow in the dialogue box just beneath this option and sleect which
operating system you need to run it under. Finally click apply, then ok. Now
try installing the program.

Thanks for your reply. I've tried right clicking on the program's setup
file, selecting Properties from the drop down menu, clicking the
compatibility tab and then placing a tick in the box next to the 'run this
program in compatibility mode for' and clicking the arrow in the dialogue box
just beneath that option and selecting an operating system to run it under.
It doesn't offer an option for Windows XP, only Windows 95, 98, NT and 2000,
so I was unable to install the program. Any more suggestions?

Thanks!

If the software is meant to run in Windows 98 then you select Windows 98
from the dialogue box. It won't show windows xp because you are already
running it. Just select which operating system the software should run in.
