Installing Driver Error

I have been trying to install an XP compatible scanner
driver and Windows Installer keeps telling me:

There was a problem installing this software.
An error occured during the installation of the device.
The class installer has denied the request to install or
upgrade this device.

There is no error code or anything else with it.

I have uninstalled, reinstalled with the current drivers
downloaded from the manufacturers website too. I have
checked my system for viruses and nothing. I've never had
a problem installing other drivers for other imaging
devices. What can I do before I pull the rest of my hair
out? Thanks all.

It is a Canon LiDE 20 flatbed scanner.
