installing camera

Hello
This request is very lengthy and detailed .. wanted to give as much info as I could to be reviewed.
I am new to these user groups, and I hope someone here can help with a problem.
I received a Gateway Digital Camera (DC-M42) for my birthday (a few days before Xmas) .. I took pictures (14) and tried to download them to a Gateway Pc. The camera came with a CD-ROM for ALL windows versions. however, when I ran the CD, it stated was for W 98 ONLY. I called the gateway store, and they said with XP, just plug it in and XP;s Plug and Play would install it at that time. It did NOT do this, and I used close to 10 double A batteries trying to install the dang thing. I took the camera to the gateway store, and the salesman pluged it up to a PC with XP, and it recognized it as a new drive.
I explained that it would NOT do that with mine, plus, I told him about the enormous amount of batteries it used. He said he felt like there was something wrong with XP, but decided to have gateway send me another camera. I received it, and have the same problem. I have called and talked with techs at Gateway numerous times, and when I talk to someone in the camera dept., they say it is XP's problem, and refers me back to XP tech, and they refer me back to the camera dept.
I explained that I have a printer/scanner that I had to install, and that when I unplug it and plug it back in, the pc picks it up.
I finally talked with a tech in camera dept who got a XP tech on the line with us.
When I explained that I had switched USB outlets on the PC both are active. In further discussions, I had mentioned that I had installed a cheap digital camera many months ago, and I had no problem using it. We finally tried to uninstall this other camera as it might be blocking the new camera installing it.
When I went to ADD/REMOVE and tried to uninstall, I got an error message that stated unable to locate INSTALL.LOG file. I kept trying to uninstall and couldn't.
They determined that to there was really no way to work-around this problem and I should save everything to CD burner, and format the hard drive and reinstall Windows XP (home edition).
In researching on my own through Gateways descriptons, help items, etc., I discoved that there was a problem with this particular camera using batteries quickly and suggests the newest rechargable batteries.
I was going to purchase the camera-card of 256MB to increase the # of pics (the camera has built in 11MG which gives me about 14 pics)... and I asked them IF I got the camera installed and when I was going to download the larger number of pics to the pc, would this drain my batteries before I completed the download???
THEY suggested:
Purchase the card...
Purchase a periperal connection that would run from the pc and simply plug the card into it...
And when I inquired if the battery life would hold up for numerous pics when added the card, would regular batteries hold up for that many pics??? so,
THEY suggested purchasing the newest rechargable batteries and recharger.
So, NOW I;m looking at :
1. Purchasing the 256MB card
2. Purchasing a peripheral hookup to the pc
3. Purchasing rechargable batteries and recharger

I need to know from you guys, am i being jerked around, or would this investment be worth the extra purchases?
I like the camera .. it has many FANTASTIC features.
I know this inquiriy is enormous, but I wanted to give you as much info as I could to describe the problem I am asking help for.
Any help will be appreciated, and I have researched many places re this, and I use the numerous user groups and find others very willing to help, so that is why I came to you guys as EXPERTS !!!!
Thanks to all

I agree with two suggestions.
With a card reader (USB card reader) you will place the 256 MB card and
download it directly your PC. You will no longer need your camera to do
this, so this will save your batteries. So as far as rechargeable batteries
and a recharger, I would wait a bit. See how power hungry this camera is and
then decide.

.

All you had to do was say, I'm having trouble transferring
files between the camera and the PC, should I buy a card
reader, and do you think rechargeable batteries are a good
idea?

The answer to both questions is "yes." Buy two sets of
rechargeable batteries. You'll go broke trying to feed
the thing with alkalines.

I used the camera yesterday .... using copper top batteries, I took 6 pictures with the Gateway camera, and the alert came on showing low batteries, and then the camera shut down. I tried 2 more new batteries, and took 2 pictures (without flash) and the samething happened. Then there was not enough power to turn the camera off to automatically close the zoom lens.
As for being lengthy in my original posting, I was trying to give enough info for review. I have seen usergroups where MVP's browbeat people that DON'T give enough info.
Still asking for help
Thanks

Hi,

My son had a similar problem using alkaline
batteries.

He purchased Ray-O-Vac NiMH batteries...
(charge in one hour) and the Ray-O-Vac 1 hour
charger.

Rayovac Rechargeable NiMH

Rayovac's 1-Hour NiMH Charger

BTW, he also tried the 15 minute rechargeables
and was not happy with them.
