Installing and conneting to the web

Tom

Ive tried to install vista on my computer and run in to some problems.

It didnt find the hdd drive im trying to install on. I used an old sil image
to find the drive. The installation went fine until it rebooted, then i got a
screen telling me to run a repair from the dvd. I did so and it didnt work.
Formatted the drive in xp pro and downloaded ALL the sil image from my
motherboard site (asus) and the hompage of silicone image and stored it on a
usb stick.
Again non of the sil image worked so i tryed to install it with the old one
once more.
And again it stopped and got a screen telling me to do a repair. After some
time i worked around this screen and forced vista to start with a sil image
that wasnt "confirmed by vista" (cannot remember now what it was called).
Vista booted up and it seems like it worked.

In order to fix this by getting the latest driver for vista i tried to
connect ot the web......and belive it or not: I couldt connect. Vista tried
to repair, reinstall and so on to get me connected and nothing worked. again
i formatted the drive and installed it on one of the sata connectors instead
of the sata raid connectors (sorry; cant explain it better). Installation
went fine exept a bluscreen when vista tryed to find my pc performance(my
bios is updatet to the latest one). After rebooting nothing worked in vista:
could still not connected to the web, could not install or uninstall programs
etc. Again i formattet the hdd drive and installed vista. it went fine this
time but could not connect to the web.
Now im getting frustratet because I used another pc (a friends laptop with
vista) to connect easely, I only took the cable from the motherbord and put
in the laptop and i was online.
I tried some more with the "bulid in" help in vista to repair etc, got fed
up and deleted/formatted my hdd and went back to xp pro.
Sorry for the "history lesson" but its therapy to get it all out. I still
want to try vista and I have some QA.
Does anyone have a suggestion to what i can do to make this work?
Can anyone tell me what kind of sil image i need to make vista to boot
proper from a RAID 0 setup or/and from "normal" sata controller"?
Similar experiance/problems that was solved?
The vista version I tried to install is ultimate 64 bit.

My pc:
Asus A8N-SLI premium S939 (with Marvell ethernet that has a updatet vista
driver).
Cpu opteron 185 2,6 Ghz dual core
memory 4 gb kingston ddr

I doesnt use username/password (ppoe?) to log on the internet. its cable
that always is connected to my main computer (and a 3com wireless router). My
ISP has not heard of a compatibility problem with the cable modem (terayon
TJ720) and vista.

Best regards
Tom.

Two questions, Tom.

1. What's a 'sil image'? That's a term I haven't heard before.

2. I've read on the group that others have had problems
installing with 4 gigs of ram in place but have been able to
successfully install with only 2 gigs on the board. Have you
tried that?

Thanks for the reply!!

I ment Silicone image. Its a controller for sata disk and raid controller.
I havent tried to install it with only 2 gb ram, I will give it a try, but
it seem like it sometimes install just fine and somtime it just not work at
all. Havent had so much problem with a OS since I formattet my pc for the
first time about 8 yers ago.
