Installer won`t install

When I had problems activating "update agent" someone suggested I download a
spyware program and run it. That is when I noticed that my installer does
not work anymore. I get the following error message " The Windows Installer
Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in
safe mode (I AM NOT) , or if the windows installer is not correctly
installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance (?) "

Next I go and download WindowsInstaller -KB893803-v2-x86.exe. Trying to
install it I get this error message " Setup has detected that the Service
Pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying. There
is no need to install this update"

Can anyone please advise me as to how I can correct this problem. I am at a
loss of what to do next, other then re-format my drive and reinstall windows
xp.

I am running windows xp media edition.
thanks for any help,
Monika

Tom, it is a Dell computer I bought approx. 3 years ago. Never had any
problems with it until recently. I don`t even know if I have an installation
disk. Guess I shall have to do a search for it and then try to repair it. I
did download a suggestion as to repair the updater but it would entail
deleting all files in C:\windows\softwaredistribution\download and also all
files in the c:\windows\softwaredistribution\eventcache and I am kind of
hesitant to do that. I don`t even know how come I have installer v. 3.2 on
the machine. I know I did not download it. I did a scan of registry with
regcure and it found over 3000 (ha) errors in the registry. The scan only
deleted all incorrect file extensions and font files. In order to fix the
rest I would have to purchase the program. I have no problem doing that, BUT
since my installer won`t work, I could not install it anyways. So what is
the point.
thanks for answering, Monika

Try downloading and installing WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe from this web
site. It's the last file listed in the download section.

Windows Installer 4.5

Good luck

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I've been having the same problem. I even
posted a question "Windows Installer / Safe Mode" and got a few answers but
none of them worked. THANK YOU!!!!
