When trying to install defender, I get the error message "the folder path my
pictures contains an invalid character. What does this mean? Anyone?

I think this is relevant to your issue, even though it doesn't state that it
applies to this beta, as a product:

Personally, if I were uncomfortable with registry editing, I would consider
going with method 2. If you have more than one administrator user on the
machine this should work. You could create a new user for the purpose, as
well--but that user must be an administrator.

I'm not sure what the downsides are--I guess that the issue with the
registry is real, and needs to be fixed, and some apps require the same user
to uninstall them as installed them, so there are more details to keep track
of.
