Error 1714 when Installing

G

Guest

After downloading the newest windows defender and trying to install it,
I get this error:

"the older version of windows defender cannot be removed"

I manually uninstalled the original version and tired to clean every
reference in the registry but there is an empty folder in Control Panel where
system explorers used to be.
When I click on the folder (it has no name) it says its invalid.

So 1. how can I install the new windows defender
2. How do I get rid of the invalid folder in control panel.

I have tried using the Windows Cleanup Utility as has been suggested before,
but Windows Defender wasnt in the list.

Please Help

Engel - please check that reference. There's no solution in that thread, I
believe, so referring others to it does
not help them. (unless there's some piece on the web that I'm not seeing via
nntp.)

I can confirm that the method in the post that Engel is referring to doesnt
work.

Is there any fix for this at all?

Thanks anyway

Hi,

you can try to install WD again, normal when you uninstall then the
problem is gone.
Let me now if that worked for you.

Thats the problem I'm having though.

When I try to install WD, I get a "the older version of windows defender
cannot be removed" error and it exits installation.

OK - you've tried the Windows Cleanup utility, which didn't find anything to
clean up.

You can't try this operation in safe mode, I think, 'cause the Windows
Installer service isn't started in safe mode--although you could try
starting it...

I think I'd recommend a clean boot--use MSCONFIG, check off diagnostic
startup, and go into services, and check the Windows Installer as well. I'm
not sure--but I think that might be enough to allow install and uninstall
operations to proceed.

Then restart, and try the install again. I don't know what's going on
here--but one idea that I have is that some other service--perhaps an add-on
to another antispyware program, is "protecting" the Windows Defender bits in
a way that makes it hard to remove.

Tom: I've already tried this before (from what others have suggested), but I
tried it again just for good luck. This didnt fix the problem. I did notice
some entries in the registry section of CC relating to Defender and made sure
they were deleted, but alas that didnt solve it.

Bill: Thanks for that suggestion, I thought it could have been something
like that too. I ran a diagnostics boot (with Windows Installer service on)
and then tried, but the same damn error still came up.

Arghhh!

I will keep trying, would be greatful if anyone has any other ideas.

Thanks

I downloaded Dail a Fix but to be honest I cant see how it would help.

I didnt want to select all options, but I tried the MSI section of it (that
didnt fix the problem).
I'm just being abit cautious of the things that I'm changing here if you see
what I mean.

Thanks anyway

Hi,

did you have a restore point from the moment you want to install the new
WD? If so try to go back and try to uninstall WD then.

Hi,

first of all put on system restore and make a backup.
(WD uses also system restore)
Delete the Defender map.
then run Regedit and look for all the Defender keys and get rid of them.
Then try again.

Hey

Well I've tried every search I can think of to remove the registry entries.
I just put Restore back on and tired again but with no luck. Would Defender
leave any trace in a Restore Point? Where could I delete those? - Theres no
other restore points in System Restore though.

Thanks

Hi,

The reason i let make you a restore point is that if you make a mistake
after deleting all the Defender out of the registry you can always start
with the F8 key and start the last knowing good.
You can remove restore points Start>Programs>Bureau Accessories>System
workset>drive cleaning
After you mark for drive C:\ the program start scanning and after a
while a new window appear with several possibilities also a tab with
"More Options"click on that and click on system restore, than it takes
away all the restore points but let the last won stay!

I still have had no luck in fixing this!

One thing I think I should mention is that Windows is very slow to startup -
just past the login screen - it takes a few minutes. I'm wondering whether
its trying to start the Defender process or not...? Or possibly something
with this issue:

I have an empty icon in control panel where "System Explorers" usually is
(the one part of Defender).

Click on the link for a picture of what I mean:

How do I get rid of that?!

Thanks again
