Installation Log - List of files created when installing programs

Is there such a thing as an installation log? When you install a program,
the installation process goes through hundreds of steps, creating and
modifying files, folders, registry keys and values, etc. Is there a way to
see exactly what is being created and modified on your computer? Even a log
after the fact would be helpful.
