I have a computer I put together MSI K8N Neo4/SLI motherboard, Maxtor 300gig
SATA hard drive, AMD Athlon 64, nVidia e-GeForce 660, corsair CMX512 lgig
matched memory. I installed the SATA/Raid drivers provided by MSI when
windows asked for it. My winxp pro CD is an OEM version I purchased with the
computer components. The error message details say: error: sxs.dll:syntax
error in manifest or policy file
D:\1386\asms\6000\MSFT\Windows\common\controls\controls.man on line 4 run
disk checking utility on your installation drive from the recovery console.
However, I never had a chance to make a recovery console floppy disk. Is my
CD bad? Did I install the SATA or Raid incorrectly? What is my next step?
I have a Samsung DVD/CD writer that is new as is the Win XP pro disk. Thank
you for your assistance.

New does not equal fully functional.

Clean your cd with a static-free soft cloth..
Try a different CD drive if you can.
Try to get a new CD from the OEM you purchased it all from.

I had the same problem. I created my raid o volume and windows formatted the
partition and the volume showed up when windows was preparing to install, but
when it got to the install tab I got the I386 asms crc error and it was the
disc. I sent the bad one back got a new one and all loaded and is running
fine. It was OEM software.

Faulty Memory

Today I had this problem whilst trying to install Windows XP Pro to a laptop. I tried about three copies of Windows XP all with the same error.

I figured it could be the lens was dirty after being accidentally touched by someone. I cleaned it several times.

Eventually after several hours of restarting installation, I remembered that I had put another stick of memory in the machine. I removed one of these and the thing ran fine.

Hope this helps some other people out there...
