install WinXP

Hello,

I was just wondering if anyone could tell me if it was
possible to install WinXP on my pc's d: drive whith still
having Win98 on my c: drive??? I want to do this so that i
can see if there will be any problems running XP on my pc
so i could test the compability with it (drivers and
such). Also when i loaded the cd in the rom in the options
there was one called "check for system compatibility
automatically" if i run this is this an install that will
clear my pc or is it only a program that runs to verify
the system???

Thanks for any info.

This checks to see if your system is compatable with XP and lets you know which hardware and software needs upgrading.
It does not install XP.
If you wish to install XP on another drive and keep 98(called dual booting) there are some advantages as well as pitfalls.
It is quite easy to do.Start your system and go into 98 then when in 98 insert the XP CD and do a NEW installation. The installation will ask to where and even give you the option to format that drive.XP will then overwrite the boot sector on the "C" drive in order to create the dual boot option on start up.XP will load as many XP drivers it has for the hardware in your system and even reach out to the net to find XP drivers and updates during the install.BUT...you most likely will need to go to manufacturers websites and download XP drivers for some of your hardware. Also by overwritting the 98 bootsector on "C" you cannot just format "C" to get rid of 98 without losing the ability to start your system. When you install a new program you will need to install it twice..once under XP and again under 98...if you wish to use the program under both OS.So as you can see it has its good and bad points. When I was dual booting I set up 2HD ...4 partitions.one for XP one for98 one for XP programs one for 98 programs. The hard part came when I decided to use only XP..I found it easiest to just format "C" and reinstall XP onto "C" and then from within the new XP format the old XP out of exsistance.

no it willnot wipe you hdd
system compability will check all programs installed on
your pc and show you a report called Upgrade.txt.

all remember if it shows you incompatible programs just go
to maufactures site and dwonloads latest updates

also never forget to run Dynmic Updates during windows xp
installation/Upgrade it takes less than minute...

When you install XP on a Hard drive with an OS already on it. XP will ask
if you want to install on aseparate partition ( make sure you DO have a
seprate partiotn available ). It will install and create a boot loader that
will give you the option of which OS to boot into. The boot loader is just
like the F8 screen in Win98 that you might have used to boot into Safe
Mode. It will give you a certian amount of time ( editable ) before it
boots to the DEFAULT OS ( also editable ).

Istalling Win98 then XP is actaully the proper way to set up a dual boot
system.
