Install W2KPro

Dean J. Garrett

I have a PC that I'd like to install W2K Pro on. We just re-formatted the
hard drive which used to have Windows 98. I can boot from the Win98 Start-up
floppy disk, and I can see the CD drive, and the C drive is empty. I have
W2K Pro on a recent MSDN CD.

Question: I can't seem to start the W2K Pro setup program, says it can't be
run from DOS. Any clues how I might do this?

Thank you.

Run WINNT from the i386-folder on your CD. You probably also want to load
SMARTDRV in Win98 before starting WINNT, else the copying phase of the
installation will take forever.

Or better yet download the ISO image from the MSDN site. The CD-Rom you'll
create from the image is bootable.

On the CD, in \i386:
winnt32.exe does not install from DOS - needs a 32-bit sys.
winnt.exe does install from DOS.
They're otherwise the same.

....but pay attention to subtle differences in the command-line options.

Dave Patrick's suggestion is by far the best for this situation.

Try slow typing, slow cursor.

When this becomes intolerable, post back here with more info.
