INSTALL: "setup cannot copy the file:"

I'm doing a clean install of windows xp on an older system. I've checked
system requirements, and it does meet them. I'm doing a floppy install, and
when it copies files from the CD, several of them cannot be copied. It is
the same files every time:

clspack.exe, javacypt.dll, javaperm.hlp, javaprxy.dll, javart.dll,
javasec.hlp, jdbgmgr.exe, jview.exe, msawt.dll, msjava.dll, msjdbc10.dll,
nt5java.inf, vmhelper.dll, wjview.exe, dx3j.dll, jit.dll

If I press Esc to skip the files, I get to the GUI portion of the
installation, and the PC speaker beeps continually, and installation hangs.

I've read MS KB article 310064, and tried their suggestions: removing a
stick of mismatched memory, leaving 3 sticks of 128MB PC133; changed the HD
to PIO-0 mode, and I just formatted the disk, so there should not be a
virus.

My system:
Abit BX6 (Intel 440 BX chipset)
Pentium II 300 w/ MMX
Maxtor 7200 20GB HD
3x128 Kingston ValueRam PC 133
ATI XPERT XL 4MB AGP w/ Rage Pro
Sony 8x/4x/32x CDRW

Have you checked the cd drive, it could be bad. I had one acting about the same way one time.

I've never had problems with the cd drive before. I tried using another cd
drive (Acer 32x IDE CD-ROM), and got the same result. It's always the same
files that won't copy.

Hello;
You really should stay with Windows 98 or maybe Windows ME with that
computer. It is at the low end of the requirements for XP, and you
definitely would not be satisified with running XP on it.
You would have more problems than it would be worth trying to keep it
running with XP.

This is a second computer -- just to mess around with. I was planning on
running windows 98SE on one drive, and windows XP on another.
