Inserting wmv files - wrong icon

J

JLL

I am using PowerPoint 2000 SP3 on a Windows 2000 Pro SP3
machine.

First, I have a path problem when trying to view an
existing presentation (done by somebody else): a slide
with a linked wmv file does not play properly because the
path is incorrect. When prompted, I entered the correct
path, but I got a white screen and only the audio part
playing.

I deleted the linked video file and inserted again with
the correct path (Insert\Movies and sound\Movie from
file). But this time, the inserted icon looks like
a "sound" icon (a speaker) and its properties are the one
of a sound file (play sound, edit sound object,). If I
play it, obviously, I get only the audio.

Note that I can play this wmv file correctly (picture and
sound) if I open it directly with Media Player
(7.01.00.3055).

Strangely enough, the presentation worked fine on an older
platform (NT4 with PowerPoint 97 and Media Player 6!)after
I spent some time fighting with the correct codec
installation.

Thanks for your input,

JLL

I'd first see if the file plays in the MCI Media Player. If not, check your
MCI registry settings. Instrux for how to do both of these is at
http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia.htm

But it sounds to me as if you may be having the same kind of codec problems
on the newer machine. So try updating to the latest Windows Media Player and
updating to the latest version of Direct X as well.

You might also download and install the NIMO codec pack mentioned in the
multimedia tutorial (link above).
