Ininstalling RD

Does anyone know how to uninstall RD. I figured with the problems I am
having with it, that if I uninstall it and then reinstall it, my
problems may clear up.

On an XP Pro box you can't uninstall the Remote Desktop host software. You
can try reregistering the software or doing a "repair install" to try and
clean up issues with the OS.

* Re-registering Remote Desktop using the command line that follows. Reboot
the PC after doing this...
regsvr32 remotepg.dll

* Otherwise try a repair install of Windows XP... Note the warnings on the
page and backup important data just to be safe...

I forgot to ask what kind of problems are you having that you think you need

to reinstall Remote Desktop on the host computer?
Al,
Here's my original request for help.

" I recently had to rebuild my PC and I am now having a problem
connecting with my RD.
I am running WIN XP, all updates. RD was running on the system before
it crashed.
What is happening now is that I get to the main screen and enter my
info, when I hit enter I get the following error.
It could not log me on and to make sure my typing is correct. I know
my log in name, and my password, so I am at a lost as to where to go
from here.
Did I make an entry somewhere that has my user name and password and
could have possibly entered it in correctly. When I boot up my system,
I have no problem logging in.
This happens in the LAN and WAN configuration.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I do use this quit often."

I did what you suggest, running the "regsvr32 remotepg.dll", but it
did not help. I do not have a domain name for my home system. I did
make sure that all the workgroups are the same and they are.

Thanks for the help

Is this failing from one specific client PC or from any client PC you try
from over your local network?

Is this failing for all Remote Desktop User Group members or only a certain
user?

Have you tried deleting the login credentials on the client and starting
over?

http://theillustratednetwork.mvps.org/ScreenShots/XP/RDPLogin.JPG

I presume your using the newest Remote Desktop client software?

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...0C-0D18-4306-ABCF-D4F18C8F5DF9&displaylang=en

Make sure the XP client is configured like this...

ok, it does not make any difference if I try from inside my home
network (intranet) or try getting from work to home, I have the same
problem.
I get to the screen that is suppose to log you in. It has the blocks
filled in with the username and the password. Then a window pops up
with the following error " "The system could not log you on. Make
sure your USER name and domain are correct, then type your password
again. Letters in passwords must be typed using the correct case."
Then the ok box. " I do not have a domain name set for my system, so I
am not worrying about that.
I have looked at the 3 pictures you sent and I was set as they show.
The only thing I can think of doing at this time is to do a repair on
the system. That is unless you may have another idea.

I am the only user. I have tried from work to home with 3 different
PC's. I have 2 laptops at home which I use to be able to use to RD to
the main PC. I can not log in with any of the above three means.
Have you tried deleting the login credentials on the client and starting
over?
I have tried this with all the PC's and laptop and have the same
results.
The log in window comes up with the credentials in the appropriate
boxes. Then the error window pops up saying. "The system could not log
you on. Make sure your USER name and domain are correct, then type
your password again. Letters in passwords must be typed using the
correct case."
I am going to try and do a repair tonight to see if this works.
I was trying to get snap shot of what I have, but cannot do it while
the RD screen is up.

You could, as a test, create a second account on the PC you want to remotely
access/control and try logging on with those credentials. Make sure the
second account is a member of the Remote Desktop Users Group if its not an
admin account. The account also needs to have a password.

Beyond that a repair install may be your best bet. Note the warnings on the
page...

http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Good luck...

Ok, we did it. I made an account and was able to log into that account
with no problem. I went back to my original account and deleted the
password. Restarted the PC, wanted to make sure that the pw was
cleaned out. Made a fresh password and then tried to relog in using
the "Intranet", it worked. I tried it by going to my office PC and
RDing back to the home PC and it worked. I used my laptop to connect
to the office..
Al, I have to hand it to you, you came through again. What would this
group do with out?

Now, I have one more question. Is it possible to do an RD and have the
person at the RD sight watch what you are doing? Currently, when I RD
to my home PC, a screen comes up that blocks what I am doing.

Thanks again, really saved me some time by not having to do a repair.

No, that is not possible by design. There was an unsupported registry hack
available in the early SP2 testing that would allow that functionality. It
was removed before the official release of SP2.

Remote Assistance will let you do that. You also might look at UltraVNC as
an alternative if you need that functionality.
